Gathering of Eagles Bake Sale

UPDATE: March 22, 2007
Dale’s first movie of our Bake Sale: Go Here
And my video rebuttal to Jeffs Puff Piece on the Denver Anti War Rally: Go Here.
Dale took seven clips of our bake sale, which included us talking to people passing by as well as Jeff Cushings editor in the Daily Camera Building.
Dale is going to edit the footage to make a short synopsis of our bake sale for Daily Camera Intern Jeff Cushing.
This morning I emailed a letter to Jeff Cushing. It is the first time I have contacted him and as of tonight, he has not yet responded. Here is the letter:
Hi Jeff,
My name is Jenny Hatch and I was at the anti war rally in Denver on Saturday. You took some video of me and two of the people who attended our Gathering of Eagles to Counter Demonstrate the hippies on saturday.
We fully expected you to include some tape of us in that video and were sadly disapointed when it did not appear in your video that turned up on the Daily Camera Web site.
Yesterday Dale Lanham, who took the photos of you interviewing me, and I held a bake sale in your behalf. We were told by your online editor that the Daily Camera did not have the time or the resources to include any more footage in that tape. So Dale and I went to bat for YOU and held a bake sale to earn some money to help you out. We made $23.00 on the streets of Boulder yesterday, just for YOU! So you can have the money to do an honest job reporting.
See, we are concerned about you and the direction you are heading as a young journalist. If you get in the habit now of only telling one side of a story, that is not going to cut it in 21st century journalism in America.
Problem is the internet makes it possible for people to learn that you are not telling the whole story, and so in a matter of minutes, your one sided puff pieces that twist and focus all attention on one aspect of a story are going to be exposed as the propaganda that they are.
Now, we have a couple of cookies left over (actually that is a lie, Ben and I ate half of them today) and would like to send them to you as a form of nourishment as you do this important work of learning balance in journalism. And we fully expect you to put that tape of the Eagles up on the Internet. If the daily camera decides it just can’t host it because of resource issues, we expect you to put that 25 or so minutes of tape up on You Tube, and I would be happy to host it on my blog as well. We want you to include your questions in the tape so that the viewers can get the full experience of what it is like to be interviewed by a Daily Camera intern.
We also would like to pay you for your time, as I said, We earned $23.00 just for you! The good citizens of Boulder have generously helped in this important cause, and we want you to know that you are not alone.
Now, just a word to the wise, if you decide to ignore our request that you give equal time in your reporting, and you go on only telling one side of the story in your journalistic endeavors, please know that your career will probably be short lived in this new media environment. We are deeply concerned about the money and time you have already spent working towards your journalism degree going to waste, and what it might mean for your future. If you choose to not tell the whole story, and try to make things right, and if you decide not to take our “tip” to help fund this important work, I just want you to know that I plan to invest that $23.00 in Halliburton Stock, in your name, as a future financial cushion for you to fall back on.
The thing is, we are going to be fighting this war on terror for many years to come, and any American Defense Industry stock is a good investment.
We’ve got your back Jeff! The Eagles are here for you!
Have a great day and I look forward to hearing from you and getting your address so I can send you the money and cookies.
Jenny Hatch
Original Post:
This morning Dale Lanham and I went to the Daily Camera Building in Boulder to hold a bake sale. We earned $23.00 for the cause of helping Camera Intern Jeff Cushing learn balance in journalism. I took a couple of pictures of Dale with our cookies and literature:

We began our sale by setting up our shop in front of the Daily Camera Building. Quite a few people stopped by, curious to know what was going on, and cookie sales were ongoing. We handed out a few cookies to a couple homeless people, and one person explained to Dale and I that he was a Vietnam Vet who had served at Tet, and then worked for the New York Fire Department for 27 years. He was in New York when 9-11 happened, working as a fireman, and when we explained to him who we were and what we were doing, he started to cry. Meeting him made the whole enterprise worth it.
Several people laughed after we explained what we were doing, a couple of people looked indignant or were angy, and we had a couple of Daily Camera employees who were really curious to know what we were doing.

After we finished our selling we decided to go into the Daily Camera building and talk to the editor Jennifer Falor about what had happened with her intern. She was very gracious and kind. We offered the rest of the cookies as well as the $23.00 to her to give to Jeff, but she said he works out of the building, and anyway, she could not accept gifts for him. However, she did give me his email, and I plan to send him the money, the rest of the cookies, as well as copies of our videos and literature, so he can know how hard Dale and I went to bat for him because of his lack of resources. As it was explained to us, he had neither the time or the money to do a complete job, so we decided to help him out with the money angle.

And we still expect him to put that tape up on the internet.
