This hilarious post by Konrath was a really fun read.
I suppose my prejudice against the print industry is tied to my first book being rejected by five different publishers before I printed it as an e-book online back in 1999.
My last few books have just been published online and I don’t plan to ever try to get anything published by any hard copy publisher. Â It is all digital all the time for this writer.
Here is a quote from the piece:
“Moderator: So why won’t people get their novels elsewhere as well?
(Print Industry stands up, pointing a finger around the room.)
Print Industry: Look, this isn’t about me. All of you guys have become irrelevant. Technology marched on, and you didn’t march with it. But that WILL NOT happen to me. There will always be bookstores, and dead tree books. We’ll continue to sell hardcovers at luxury prices, and pay artists 6% to 15% royalties on whatever list price WE deem appropriate. And the masses will buy our books BECAUSE WE SAID SO! WE SHALL NEVER BECOME OBSOLETE!!!
Buggy Whip Industry: Amen, brother! That’s what I keep trying to tell these people!CDs: (whispering to LPs) I give him six years, tops.”
I actually think J.A. is being generous with his six years for the print industry to become obsolete. Â With the Kindle being the number one product sold on Amazon these days, the winds of change are blowing in digital prints direction. Â I give them four years, three if a Conservative is elected president in 2012.
As I was uploading my books to Kindle last summer, and as I wrote my fourth book, Confessions of a Boulder Conservative these past few months and loaded You Tube Video Code into the body of the book so that those who read online can just watch videos while they read the text, I had the thought….who would pay to buy this book in paper form when the videos and music make it come alive??? Â I see the video embeds as a critical and important part of the narrative of that book.
You can purchase my latest book hosted on Kindle! Â Confessions of a Boulder Conservative.
