Dr. Amy’s cackling about dead babes in Colorado

This most recent post reminds me of the “statistically significant” death rate of various birth stories pulled from the Mothering Discussion Room Archive that Dr. Amy did a few weeks ago.

With the title: The horrifying death toll of homebirth in Colorado  Amy begins the post by claiming that the various babes who have been lost during homebirth are statistically significant as compared to hospital born counterparts.

What she fails to mention is the fact that mothers who choose homebirth and have a baby die almost NEVER return to the hospital for a subsequent birth.  We homebirthers know that sometimes babies die despite all efforts to make certain they will  live.  But that does not mean we will subject ourselves and our little ones to the various indignities and defilements of a profession gone mad.

The comment section tied to this post has some interesting insights, with a few analytical types questioning her statistics.

I wonder when and if Dr. Amy (who is so pro vaccine she may as well be a paid pharma whore for the drug companies) is going to talk about the “statistically significant” miscarriage rate of those mothers who have willingly accepted the h1n1 vaccine while pregnant?

She always has so much poo to fling at the homebirth community, dumping on us constantly for our choice to live free from medical slavery.  What about those Moms who have been the victims of genocide as their children have been ripped from their wombs by a toxic cocktail of drugs and toxins that were designed to cause miscarriage and sterility?

What? No indignation?  NO Rage?  NO thoughtful point by point post to scream and yell about the dead babies who are being poisoned in our society right under our noses?

Shame on you Dr. Amy!  Your defense of the indefensible is sickening and putrid to observe.  Children are dying and being permanently harmed by this toxic brew of injectible chemicals and you as a health “expert” stand silently by while the death toll rises.  How dare you question my choice as a woman to give birth free from the machinery and drugs…  You love to talk about death and what will prevent dead babies, why not do a post on the many babes who have been murdered the past few weeks in America and around the world when Mothers rolled up their sleeves and took a shot of poison in the form of a “health promoting vaccine”?

Hypocrite!

Mothering Blog: Are you a bad parent?

Fall_Images-10I’m really enjoying Jennifers blog since the birth of her fourth baby.

She has reminded me of so many issues and real feelings with her insightful commentary.  My second  baby was also my “high needs” infant who pulled every bit and particle of energy out of me as a mother.  Allison nursed every twenty minutes as a newborn and was so intense in her demands of me.  This continued on until she was six and then she gradually shifted to a very independent eight year old.

Seeing the love that Jennifer has for her daughter now is evidence that for some babes, mother love comes gradually, as we struggle through some difficult experiences.

I think this blog is one of the most insightful on the web right now, give it a look!

Mary Siever: preparing for Unassisted Childbirth

Giving Birth

This is it! Are you prepared? Well, it isn’t as hard as you think. If you feel the need for all the usual supplies a midwife might carry, there are some great places to order birthing supplies, online. They are listed on my links page, so don’t forget to check them out!

Okay, now on to the event at hand! I will list what I had at Sinéad’s birth, and what I found I actually needed.

Towels…lots of nice cozy warm towels! They came in really handy.

A drop sheet for the bed, or the floor, or the couch…wherever you plan to give birth, unless you are birthing in a tub or outside. I don’t know a whole lot about waterbirth as I haven’t yet had one, but I have provided some links to great pages on it, so do check them out if you are considering this. I highly recommend it as I loved labouring in the water.

Sterilised Scissors if you plan on cutting the cord, if you are planning a lotus birth then this will be unnecessary. I have provided links for this as well, as again, this is not an area of expertise for me.

Music….Anything you like! Preferably peaceful music.

Soft lights. Candles are great and provide a terrific atmosphere.

Container for the placenta, a bowl, whatever you feel you want, depending on how you plan to use it….bury it, whatever you decide.

Herbs such as Nettle, Alfalfa leaf infusion, Motherwort and Shepherd’s Purse are terrific helps for preventing hemorrhage.

Chux Pads are also a must.

To tie the cord you will either need shoelaces (keep them in the package until you use them or boil them to sterilise them beforehand) or you can make your own cord ties out of embroidery thread. I plan on doing this from now on. Do not use dental floss, as those who have used it found that it cut right through the cord, and you do not want that. Some birth supply places sell clamps as well.

Olive Oil is also great to have on hand to massage and support the perineum.

If you like aromatherapy, there are some scents that can facilitate the birthing process, and just make things…well, smell nice! I have heard that a great one for labour is lavender. But I have been told on good authority that basically anything you like will help.

Books that inspire or assist you in your birth. Unassisted Childbirth by Laura Shanley was one I found very beneficial, along with Spiritual Midwifery by Ina May Gaskin and Heart and Hands by Elizabeth Davis. Other helpful texts and readings are contained on my Suggested Reading page.

There are other necessary items depending on your area of comfort or need. Rh negative mothers will have other considerations to make. Links are provided on my links page for those who need this information.
