Ezra Taft Benson Biography
For the past few weeks I have been reading the biography of Ezra Taft Benson. He was the 13th prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
He also served in Eisenhowers Cabinet as the Secretary of Agriculture for eight years. And during those years he was perhaps the most controversial man in America. As a clear thinking visionary he did more to stop the collectivistion of American Farmland than perhaps any other person in America. And because of his relationships and influence with other heads of state around the world, his influence and voice condemning Communistic tendencies was felt globally.
I read his biography every couple of years to recharge my liberty loving batteries. It was a timely experience to read this book once again, especially right before this key election, when we will learn what the American People have to say about President Bush’s foreign policy.
My own gut feeling is that “we the people” will resoundly vote in support of the President and staying the course in Iraq.
I also believe strongly that after the election things will settle down in Iraq. The terrorists know that all they have to do to prevail in Iraq is kill the will of the American People for this fight for Freedom. What they may not realize is that we are not the same people we were during the Vietnam years. And the internet has opened up the floodgates in terms of availability of information. Truth seekers can get the facts about any topic of interest to them.

I was so blessed to live on the earth when President Benson was the prophet. All during my growing up years President Bensons voice was in my ears. When I attended BYU in 1986, the choir I sang with was asked to sing during Commencement in the summer of 1986. As a choir member I was able to sit just a couple of rows behind the prophet, who was attending the commencement as a grandfather, to see the graduation of one of his grandsons. It was so thrilling to me to be that physically close to a great man, and to hear his words of wisdom as he spoke.
During my 11 months at BYU, the Prophet gave several key note addresses, a couple of which were made into pamphlets and sent out to the church members. His most controversial was a talk to the Mothers in Zion. Which created quite a bit of debate on campus and in the classrooms.
Rust%20Colored%20yellow%20Leaves.jpg
I remember two young husbands verbally duking it out in my religion class. One was a father of four, and the other was a man who had made the decision with his wife to pospone having children. The verbal gymnastics of their conversation let me know that this issue was a hot topic in young married mormondom, and true to form, President Benson did not hesitate to speak it bluntly and call the women of the church back home to raise their children.
Pinecone%20with%20Sunrise%20%282%29.jpg
Here are a couple of choice quotes from the talk:
“Tonight, at this fireside for parents, seeking the sweet inspiration of heaven, I would like to speak directly to the mothers assembled here and throughout the Church, for you are, or should be, the very heart and soul of the family.
No more sacred word exists in secular or holy writ than that of mother. There is no more noble work than that of a good and God-fearing mother.
This evening I pay tribute to the mothers in Zion and pray with all my heart that what I have to say to you will be understood by the Spirit and will lift and bless your lives in your sacred callings as mothers.
President David O. McKay declared: “Motherhood is the greatest potential influence either for good or ill in human life. The mother’s image is the first that stamps itself on the unwritten page of the young child’s mind. It is her caress that first awakens a sense of security, her kiss, the first realization of affection; her sympathy and tenderness, the first assurance that there is love in the world.” (Gospel Ideals, p. 452.)
President McKay continues: “Motherhood consists of three principal attributes or qualities: namely, (1) the power to bear, (2) the ability to rear, (3) the gift to love. . . This ability and willingness properly to rear children, the gift to love, and eagerness, yes, longing to express it in soul development, make motherhood the noblest office or calling in the world.
She who can paint a masterpiece or write a book that will influence millions deserves the admiration and the plaudits of mankind; but she who rears successfully a family of healthy, beautiful sons and daughters, whose influence will be felt through generations to come, . . . deserves the highest honor that man can give, and the choicest blessings of God.” (Gospel Ideals, pp. 453-54.)
With all my heart I endorse the words of President McKay.
Purple%2C%20Red%2C%20and%20Yellow%20Leaves.jpg
In the eternal family, God established that fathers are to preside in the home. Fathers are to provide, to love, to teach, and to direct.
But a mother’s role is also God-ordained. Mothers are to conceive, to nourish, to love, and to train. So declare the revelations.
In Section 132 of Doctrine and Covenants, the Lord states that the opportunity and responsibility of wives is “to multiply and replenish the earth, according to my commandment, and to fulfill the promise which was given by my Father before the foundation of the world, and for their exaltation in the eternal worlds, that they may bear the souls of men; for herein is the work of my Father continued, that he may be glorified” (D&C 132:62).
With this divine injunction, husbands and wives, as co-creators, should eagerly and prayerfully invite children into their homes.
Then, as each child joins their family circle, they can gratefully exclaim, as did Hannah, “For this child I prayed; and the Lord hath given me my petition which I asked of him: therefore also I have lent him to the Lord: as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the Lord” (1 Samuel 1:27-28).
Isn’t that beautiful? A mother praying to bear a child and then giving him to the Lord.
I have always loved the words of Solomon: “Children are an heritage of the Lord and . . . happy is the man [and woman] that hath [their] quiver full of them” (see Psalm 127: 3-5 ).
I know the special blessings of a large and happy family, for my dear parents had a quiver full of children. Being the oldest of eleven children, I saw the principles of unselfishness, mutual consideration, loyalty to each other, and a host of other virtues developed in a large and wonderful family with my noble mother as the queen of that home.
Young mothers and fathers, with all my heart I counsel you not to postpone having your children, being co-creators with our Father in heaven.
Do not use the reasoning of the world, such as, “We’ll wait until we can better afford having children, until we are more secure, until John has completed his education, until he has a better paying job, until we have a larger home, until we’ve obtained a few of the material conveniences,” and on and on.
This is the reasoning of the world and is not pleasing in the sight of God. Mothers who enjoy good health, have your children and have them early. And, husbands, always be considerate of your wives in the bearing children.
Do not curtail the number of your children for personal or selfish reasons. Material possessions, social convenience, and so-called professional advantages are nothing compared to a righteous posterity. In the eternal perspective, children–not possessions, not position, not prestige–are our greatest jewels.
Brigham Young emphasized: “There are multitudes of pure and holy spirits waiting to take tabernacles, now what is our duty?–To prepare tabernacles for them; to take a course that will not tend to drive those spirits into the families of the wicked, where they will be trained in wickedness, debauchery, and every species of crime. It is the duty of every righteous man and woman to prepare tabernacles for all the spirits they can” (Discourses of Brigham Young, p. 197).
Yes, blessed is the husband and wife who have a family of children. The deepest joys and blessings in life are associated with family, parenthood, and sacrifice. To have those sweet spirits come into the home is worth practically any sacrifice.
Pink%20Roses%202.jpg
We realize that some women, through no fault of their own, are not able to bear children. To these lovely sisters, every prophet of God has promised that they will be blessed with children in the eternities and that posterity will not be denied them.
Through pure faith, pleading prayers, fasting, and special priesthood blessings, many of these same lovely sisters, with their noble companions at their sides have had miracles take place in their lives and have been blessed with children. Others have prayerfully chosen to adopt children, and to these wonderful couples we salute you for the sacrifices and love you have given to those children you have chosen to be your own.
Now, my dear mothers, knowing of your divine role to bear and rear children and bring them back to Him, how will you accomplish this in the Lord’s way? I say the Lord’s way, because it is different from the world’s way.
The Lord clearly defined the roles of mothers and fathers in providing for and rearing a righteous posterity. In the beginning, Adam–not Eve–was instructed to earn the bread by the sweat of his brow. Contrary to conventional wisdom, a mother’s calling is in the home, not in the market place.
Again, in the Doctrine and Covenants, we read: “Women have claim on their husbands for their maintenance, until their husbands are taken” (D&C 83:2). This is the divine right of a wife and mother. She cares for and nourishes her children at home. Her husband earns the living for the family, which makes this nourishing possible. With that claim on their husbands for their financial support, the counsel of the Church has always been for mothers to spend their full time in the home in rearing and caring for their children.
We realize also that some of our choice sisters are widowed and divorced and that others find themselves in unusual circumstances where, out of necessity, they are required to work for a period of time. But these instances are the exception, not the rule.
In a home where there is an able-bodied husband, he is expected to be the breadwinner. Sometimes we hear of husbands who, because of economic conditions, have lost their jobs and expect their wives to go out of the home and work even though the husband is still capable of providing for his family.
In these cases, we urge the husband to do all in his power to allow his wife to remain in the home caring for the children while he continues to provide for his family the best he can, even though the job he is able to secure may not be ideal and family budgeting will have to be tighter.
Our beloved prophet Spencer W. Kimball had much to say about the role of mothers in the home and their callings and responsibilities. I am impressed tonight to share with you some of his inspired pronouncements. I fear that much of his counsel has gone unheeded, and families have suffered because of it. But I stand this evening as a second witness to the truthfulness of what President Spencer W. Kimball said. He spoke as a true prophet of God.
President Kimball declared: “Women are to take care of the family–the Lord has so stated–to be an assistant to the husband, to work with him, but not to earn the living, except in unusual circumstances. Men ought to be men indeed and earn the living under normal circumstances” (Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball, p. 318 ).
President Kimball continues: “Too many mothers work away from home to furnish sweaters and music lessons and trips and fun for their children. Too many women spend their time in socializing, in politicking, in public services when they should be home to teach and train and receive and love their children into security” (Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball, p. 319).
Remember the counsel of President Kimball to John and Mary: “Mary, you are to become a career woman in the greatest career on earth–that of homemaker, wife, and mother. It was never intended by the Lord that married women should compete with men in employment. They have a far greater and more important service to render.
Setting%20sun%20through%20the%20leaves.jpg
Again President Kimball speaks: “The husband is expected to support his family and only in an emergency should a wife secure outside employment. Her place is in the home, to build the home into a haven of delight.
“Numerous divorces can be traced directly to the day when the wife left the home and went out into the world into employment. Two incomes raise the standard of living beyond its norm. Two spouses working prevent the complete and proper home life, break into the family prayers, create an independence which is not cooperative, causes distortion, limits the family, and frustrates the children already born” (Spencer W. Kimball, San Antonio Fireside, Dec. 3, 1977, pp. 9-10 ).
Setting%20sunshine%20autumn.jpg
Finally President Kimball counsels: “I beg of you, you who could and should be bearing and rearing a family: Wives, come home from the typewriter, the laundry, the nursing, come home from the factory, the cafe. No career approaches in importance that of wife, homemaker, mother–cooking meals, washing dishes, making beds for one’s precious husband and children. Come home, wives, to your husbands. Make home a heaven for them. Come home, wives, to your children, born and unborn. Wrap the motherly cloak about you and, unembarrassed, help in a major role to create the bodies for the immortal souls who anxiously await.
“When you have fully complemented your husband in home life and borne the children, growing up full of faith, integrity, responsibility, and goodness, then you have achieved your accomplishment supreme, without peer, and you will be the envy [of all] through time and eternity” (Spencer W. Kimball, San Antonio Fireside, Dec. 3, 1977, pp. 11-12).
President Kimball spoke the truth. His words are prophetic.”

It is difficult for me to put into words the impact this talk had on my mind and my heart when I first heard them. I was only 19, and had made many plans for myself in terms of a career on the stage, perhaps one of the most unfriendly professions in terms of family life, a mission for my church, and a degree in edcation, so I could become a high school theatre teacher.
All of those plans and goals just melted away as I listend to this talk and others like it during my year at BYU, and I am so grateful for a prophet who had the guts to tell it like it was during those confusing years of the 80’s when my generation of young women was being propagandized in feminist thought and behavior to such a degree that when I decided to marry my sweetheart and immediately start our family, many people assumed I had lost my marbles.
I have no regrets about spending my twenties bearing our first four children and doing the difficult and rewarding work of nurturing them and being a stay at home mother.

Yesterday I watched Oprah because she had a show on Moms around the world. It was an interesting hour of television. And true to form she shoved the socialistic scandinavian countries on her viewers as being the “best place to raise a family”. Why? Well, they have universal health care, and they get guaranteed time off, and they get paid to stay home with their babes, and they get to have cash to pay for nannies when they go back to work. Etc Etc Etc…
The underlying theme of the show was that Big Government and Socialized government is the answer to the worlds problems in terms of Mothers having what they need to take care of children. I wish, when she was sharing the stories of African Mothers, that she would have had the courage to link the dreadful march of communism across the African Continent with the current problems and traumas being experienced by families in the various African Nations. Marxism has had a deadly impact on the families who have lived under its iron fist, yet like most Progressives, Oprah chooses not to accept the realities of the past, the abysmal failures of other socialized and collectivised societies, and the horrifying impact this has had on family life.
Instead she chooses to shove her view of what will make things better for mothers on her television audience, and gives no thought or time to the other side, the conservative and traditional republican values of less government, lower taxes, free markets, and strong national defense.
So many of the women, especially those in the poorer nations, said the dream that had was to simply come home from the workplace and raise their children.
The question is: How do we turn our topsy turvey world into a place where mothers and babies thrive and the husband is able to provide for his own?
The principles outlined in the various materials shared in this post, written by and about Ezra Taft Benson hold the key. They are as relevant and important to our day as at any time in our nations and our worlds history. I would challenge my readerst to take some quality time to read and then ponder the messages of President Benson.

Out of deep respect for President Benson, and in an attempt to further educate my readers, here are a series of quotes, links, and books that Ezra Taft Benson wrote during his very fruitful years as a Prophet, Seer, and Revelator.
His Personal Creed:
I am for freedom and against slavery.
I am for social progress and against socialism.
I am for a dynamic economy and against waste.
I am for the private competitive market and against unnecessary government intervention.
I am for national security and against appeasement and capitulation to an obvious enemy.

Blogging Wal Mart

I just read this post on Pajamas Media…
“Roger Simon details the saga of the Edelman PR firm, which has admitted to creating “flogs”—fake weblogs, that is—to promote companies like Walmart.”
After reading a couple of the links, articles, and comments from that post I thought it might be good to explain why I plug Wal Mart every chance I get here on my own blog.
First and foremost, I am trying to send a message to the PC police in our society that I will not be bullied into shopping or not shopping at a certain store based on “Progressive” values.
Funny Story:
I use a cleaning lady every once in a while when my asthma is acting up. She is a Boulderite, really nice gal, but after being here to help with dusting a time or two it came out when I was watching Fox News one day to check on things in Iraq, (my brother was serving in Iraq that year and I watched the news constantly to hear what was up), that I was a rabid conservative and she was a liberal, or Progressive, as she refers to herself. She has all the talking points memorized for her various arguments and we have had some fun debates and conversations.
I flat out told her that if she was in my house and I was paying her money that she was absolutely not allowed to bash President Bush in my home, but that I supported her right to bash him all she wanted out of my house.
She has been pretty good about that, but one day it was so cute when she confessed to me, all guilty and sheepish, that she shopped at Wal Mart every once in a while. I just about lost it laughing when she made her Confession. I promised that I was not going to judge her for her choice of shopping location, and that I shopped at Wal Mart at least once a week and sometimes twice a week. She looked me in the eye, and then said “all that stuff is just so dang cheap!”.
I agree.
If I had the cash, I would shop for all of our families groceries at Vitamin Cottage and purchase everything Organic. Or I would go to Boulder to shop at Whole Foods, or Wild Oats, or even our local Grocery store, King Soopers, where most organic foods can be purchased for reasonable prices.
But we have a large family, and depending on the week, even with me cooking a huge portion of our daily fare from scratch, I still go to wal mart once a week to purchase the foods to make my kids lunches, and to get certain types of cheeses, and I love their salsa. I buy bread products like tortillas, corn chips, and hoagie buns. Or I go to Sam’s Club to bulk purchase toilet paper, or ziploc bags, or garbage bags, or olive oil, or honey, or peanut butter.
Fact is, feeding a family is expensive. And Wal Mart saves us a boatload of cash.
I can go fill up a cart with groceries, get a coloring book for Ben, a pair of jeans for Andy and some socks for Shelly and come out of the store having laid out only $200 bucks.
It makes my husband happy every time I come home from shopping and show him the Wal Mart receipts, instead of showing up with three or four bags from the health food store, and trying to hide the receipt because I just spent another three hundred dollars and did not have much to show for it.
It is a balancing act, trying to budget, purchase what I feel is the best food for my family, yet not go overboard with the organic thing.
Sometimes I just can’t afford to purchase everything organic, and it is sometimes difficult to find the cash to even get the extras that make our food storage of beans and grains more fun to eat.
Wal Mart has never paid me a dime for the mentions on my Blog. I don’t accept advertisers right now, and I won’t be bullied into shopping at some PC store like Target because of someone else’s values. (I do shop at Target occasionally if it is where I want to shop – not knocking them) but I won’t be shamed into shopping at any store.
Full and true confessions, I get a peverse delight doing anything that liberals abhore, which is why I can’t wait to purchase our first SUV and use it to drive to Wal Mart, stopping for fries at MacDonalds and dressing my kids in their Nike Shoes.
I believe in Free Market Capitalism.
I say let the market rule.
If Wal Mart has been guilty of bad choices regarding blogosphere useage, they will learn…fast.
The internet has a way of quickly sifting out the fakers….
And if at any time I change my values regarding internet advertising on my Blog, my readers will be the first to know.
And, I will NEVER let an advertiser tell me what I can and cannot say on my blog.
Let Freedom RING!

Barley and Mung Bean Soup with Spiced Kamut Muffins

Getting%20ready%20to%20cook.jpg
Cooking Pot with Mixing bowl all clean and ready to go!
Last night I made some Barley and Mung bean Soup with Spiced Kamut Muffins. Here are some pictures and the recipes, with instructions…
Peeled%20Vegetables%20ready%20to%20chop.jpg
Peeled Vegetables
Ingredients for Mung Bean Soup
2 TBS Olive Oil
1 Onion
3 Garlic Cloves
1 Sweet Potato
1 White Potato
1/2 C. Green Mung Beans
1/8 C Whole Unhulled Barley
1/2 tsp. FG (Fresh Ground) Black, Red, and White whole Peppercorns
1 tsp Sea Salt
Stock:
1/2 C Oatstraw Tea
Peels from White Potato
1 TBS Sea Salt
10 Coriander Seeds
4 Cardamon Pods
Pressing%20the%20garlic.jpg
In a large cooking pot saute chopped vegetables in Olive Oil until tender.
Red%2C%20White%2C%20and%20Black%20Peppercorns.jpg
Fresh Grind the Peppercorns in a seed mill.
Tossing%20in%20the%20Mung%20Beans.jpg
Soak the mung beans in boiling water for twenty minutes before adding them to the vegetables.
Fresh Grind the whole Barley in a seed mill until it is well cracked, then toss it into the soup pot. Make up the stock pot using the ingredients listed hard boiled in two quarts of water for twenty minutes. Strain this water into the soup pot when the vegetables are soft.
Blending%20the%20soup%20with%20hand%20held%20blender.jpg
Simmer soup for an hour and then gently blend with a hand held blender. I just quickly blend it until the soup is thickened, but not mushy. Add in the final tsp of sea salt and let it sit for a couple minutes hot in a soup bowl. The final resting phase really incorporates the flavors of this amazing soup!
Finished%20soup.jpg
Paul and I chowed down two full bowls of soup each. Please note it is Vegan, and no animal ingredients were needed or wanted. The little bits of bean and grain made for a complete protein, and gave amazing flavor and body to the soup. By quick grinding the barley and soaking the mung beans for twenty minutes, this soup cooked up rather quickly, and did not need the hours it usually takes to soften whole barley. The simmering temperature I cooked it on was higher than a low simmer, and I did this to hurry the soup, but if you do it, you need to watch it to make sure it does not burn.
With the soup I cooked up some Kamut Muffins with a half cup of Fresh Ground Spices.
Here is a shot of the grains being ground in my electric mill:

Recipe:
Spiced Kamut Muffins: (Double Batch)
4 Cups FG Kamut Grain Flour
1/2 C FG Golden Flax Seeds
10 Whole Cloves
1/4 Whole Nutmeg
1 whole Cinnamon Stick
2 C Sugar
1/2 Cup Agave Sweetner
2 C. Goat Milk
4 Organic Eggs
1 Cup White Flour

Mix dry ingredients together well, and then start adding in the wet ingredients. Add in two cups of Goats milk.

Here is a shot of my gallon of Agave – if you purchase this larger size container, the costs go down markedly – $25.00 for this gallon at Vitamin Cottage
Organic%20Eggs.jpg
Organic eggs give an amazing amount of high quality protein to anything you cook them with. After you add in all of the wet ingredients, just mix the dough for a minute or so until it is well mixed. This recipe was a little too wet, so I added in another cup of white flour to thicken it up. Muffin dough should be very thick.
Please note this recipe does not contain any oil, salt, or leavening. It simply does not need it. The muffins have an amazing spicy taste, and although very sweet (I’ve learned I have to add in the sweeteners to get my children to eat them), they are very nutritious.

Bought this organic cooking spray at Wal Mart.
Ice%20cream%20scoop%20to%20fill%20pans.jpg
I use an ice cream scoop to put the dough into the muffin pans, it is much quicker and gets the perfect amount of dough into the small muffin pans. One scoop for the small pans, and two scoops for the large muffin pan.

Muffin dough in the small pan with Dora the Explorer muffin paper. You have to be a little careful about these muffin papers. Jeff, who is twelve opened up his lunch one day and his friends had a field day teasing him about the Dora muffin papers. I bought them for Ben, who at three loves to watch Dora the Explorer…

News with Commentary

Winter%20Sunset%20%235.jpg
Here is a synopsis of the news stories and Commentary I found interesting on the web in the past few days:
Hospital Mistake Paralyzes New Mom
“INDIANAPOLIS — A hospital that gave lethal doses of a drug to three premature babies has made another medication mistake, giving a new mother a painkiller 10 times faster than intended and making her temporarily unable to walk.
Amber Baise, 18, of Indianapolis, who received the painkiller during childbirth, has regained some movement in her legs as she recovers from what Methodist Hospital are calling a doctor’s mistake.”
Bigger families see a little boom
“Laura Bennett isn’t bound by convention. Professionally, at age 42, she’s pursuing a mid-career switch into big-time fashion design. At home, she’s a mother of five — with No. 6 due next month.
“It was nothing that we planned ahead of time,” Bennett says. “It’s more that we were enjoying all the kids.
“We have a happy home. Why not have as many children as we can?””

Democrats Find Their Values Issue

“So the newly minted Party of Virtue, the Legion of Decency reborn, insists that Hastert must go and Republicans must lose control of the House because – unbeknownst to them – a pathetic little perv from the Sunshine State sent suggestive instant messages to pages.
Will the Democrats now turn over a new page and denounce efforts to abolish age of consent laws, support the Boy Scouts of America, and push for passage of the Child Custody Protection Act?
Fat chance.”
The good news about nuclear destruction
“What possible good news could there ever be about nuclear destruction coming to America, whether it is dirty bombs, terrorist nukes or ICBMs from afar?
In a word, they are all survivable for the vast majority of American families, if they know what to do beforehand and have made even the most modest preparations.
Tragically, though, most Americans today won’t give much credence to this good news, much less seek out such vital life-saving instruction, as they have been jaded by our culture’s pervasive myths of nuclear un-survivability.”

WHAT TO DO IF A NUCLEAR DISASTER IS IMMINENT!
I have linked to this article before, but do so again, because it is so comprehensive…Jen

2nd warning for Muslims to leave U.S. before attack

WASHINGTON – “Another Pakistani journalist is reporting receiving another threat – this one from a senior Taliban leader – warning all Muslims to leave the U.S. in anticipation of a major terrorist attack before the end of Ramadan.
The head of the Islamabad-based al-Quds Center reported receiving an audio message from Mullah Masoom Afghani urging U.S. Muslims to get out of the country “because Allah’s punishment would fall on America in the month of Ramadan.”
Muslims are observing Ramadan this year Sept. 24 to Oct. 23.”

Teachers pass ‘illiterate’ boy

“Mr Ryan said parents could insist on their child being held back a year, but there were other factors taken into consideration, including a student’s age, size and maturity.
An Education Queensland spokeswoman said the school would work closely with the father and son to help Anthony through his final years, including the possibility of a school-based apprenticeship.
“Given the parent’s strong views, the school will arrange to meet with the parent to further discuss his concerns and options for the future,” the spokeswoman said.
“The school is committed to ensuring the best possible outcome for this student.””
Nice to know it is not only America who has an “education deficit” when it comes to educational “bear-o-cracy”. Our Aussie friends seem to be struggling with these issues as well.
Tyrants and the Bomb
Tyrants and the Bomb
There’s a deep history to this latest Kim Jong Il move.
By Ion Mihai Pacepa
“The detonation of a nuclear device by North Korea’s tyrant is an apocalyptic event calling for America’s unity against one of her most indoctrinated foes. “Let’s exterminate our sworn enemy U.S. imperialism!” reads a slogan posted inside North Korean jet cockpits, sailor’s cabins, and army guard posts. Instead, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid called for an investigation of the Bush administration’s “failed North Korea policies.” I once belonged to the sanctum sanctorum of the impregnable citadel of Communist nuclear intrigue, and I have hard reasons to believe that no atomic diplomacy on earth could have stopped Kim Jong Il from achieving nuclear weapons.
In my other life, as a Romanian intelligence general, I was at the beck and call of another 5’4” dictator involved in building nuclear weapons in a defiant bid for survival and respect, and nothing short of death was able to deter him from achieving that goal. Not even the defection of his top nuclear-weapon adviser — myself.
Eleven years later, in 1989, Ceausescu was executed for genocide, and Romania’s new government reported to the International Atomic Energy Agency that it had discovered plutonium separated in a Triga nuclear reactor. The amount of plutonium found at that time was small, but the act was a clear violation of Romania’s commitments made under the Non-Proliferation Treaty. According to a Canadian study, “a more extensive nuclear weapons program may have been covered up.””
I love the writings of Mr. Pacepa, here is another of my favorites, an interview at Front Page which makes the whole WMD debate mute in regards to Sadaam Hussein.

Can we talk?

Thomas Sowell:
“Young people educated at our most prestigious colleges and universities are learning the lesson that storm trooper tactics can silence those who are not in vogue on campus, and honest expressions of opinion about issues involving anything from affirmative action to women in the military can get you suspended if you refuse the humiliation and hypocrisy of being “re-educated.”
Meanwhile, liberals in Congress have long been advocating a return to the so-called “fairness” doctrine requiring “balance” in broadcasting. Talk radio is overwhelmingly conservative simply because liberal talk radio has failed repeatedly to attract comparable-sized audiences.”
A DARK GLOBALISM
Mark Steyn:
“So an insurgency that lurks within a religion automatically has a global network. And you don’t need “deep cover”: You can hang your shingle on Main Street and we won’t even notice it. And when we do – as we did on 9/11 – we still won’t do anything about it, because, well, it’s a religion, and modern man is disinclined to go after any faith except perhaps his own.”

Nukes and More Nukes

“THE MOST critical question following North Korea’s reported nuclear test is whether anything can be done to stop other states or terrorist groups from acquiring such weapons in coming years. Can North Korea be prevented from exporting its nukes? Is the world entering an era in which nuclear war will be virtually inevitable? Based on the response to North Korea last week, the outlook isn’t good.”

OH, THAT’s what is causing it……I never would have guessed…
Glorious Food? English Schoolchildren Think Not
“Five months after the celebrity chef Jamie Oliver succeeded in cajoling, threatening and shaming the British government into banning junk food from its school cafeterias, many schools are learning that you can lead a child to a healthy lunch, but you can’t make him eat.
The fancy new menu at the Rawmarsh School here?
“It’s rubbish,” said Andreas Petrou, an 11th grader. Instead, en route to school recently, he was enjoying a north of England specialty known as a chip butty: a French-fries-and-butter sandwich doused in vinegar.
“We didn’t get a choice,” he said of the school food. “They just told us we were having it.””
This is what I have learned with my own four teenagers: if you want school children to eat healthfully, you have to use stealth. I make them brownies that have all of the fat and sugar included in the original recipe, but I make them with whole wheat flour, flax seed meal, and any other nutritious ingredient I can throw into the batter without them noticing.
I also make waffles, which they smother in syrup and butter, with whole grains and organic dairy, just to get some whole foods into them.
Chocolate chips are a mothers best friend when trying to get that “medicine” into children who crave sweets and are constantly on the run. Whole wheat cookies baked with chips are my ticket to the children chowing down some whole foods.

I say we need to pick our battles with children, with the understanding and acceptance that most obesity problems begin way before little Johnny or Susie start school. Babies who are Formula fed have a markedly higher incidence of obesity. If we are going to play gestapo with our kids diets, why not take on the more difficult task of educating young mothers with the FACTS about breastfeeding, rather than causing more rebellion in our teens by taking a dictatorial stance in regards to what they put in their mouths?

Bird Flu Vaccine May Hit Many Strains

“Human trials indicate an H5N1 bird flu vaccine developed using a virus isolated in Vietnam can neutralize antibodies from H5N1 viruses found in other countries, the vaccine’s manufacturer said Wednesday.
The preliminary trial results raised hopes that vaccines based on older H5N1 bird flu strains might prove effective against future variants of the virus in the event of a pandemic.”
I don’t plan on using this vaccine, no matter what they claim about it.

Meningitis Shot May Hold Higher GBS Risk
“Young people who get a new meningitis shot may be at a slightly higher risk of developing a paralyzing side effect, federal researchers said Thursday.
Even so, federal health officials said the benefits far outweigh the risk of getting the rare condition, Guillain-Barre syndrome. They are not backing off their recommendation that most students be vaccinated.
The researchers cautioned that they are uncertain about their risk estimate, and a larger study is being planned.”
Another study? Man, I feel better knowing the Feds are on the case….
Drug Errors Send 700,000 to ER Every Year
“Experts from the CDC and FDA estimate that every year, more than 700,000 people visit U.S. emergency departments because of side effects, accidental overdoses, and other adverse drug events”
Why not JUST SAY NO?
2 Preemies Dead, 3rd Critical After Receiving Adult Dose of Drug at Ind. Hospital
“Two premature infants died and a third was in critical condition after being given adult-size doses of medication, prompting hospital officials to review drug-handling procedures.
Adult doses of the blood-thinner Heparin were somehow placed in a drug cabinet at the Newborn Intensive Care Unit of Methodist Hospital, said Sam Odle, chief executive of Methodist and Indiana University Hospitals. The hospital said human error was to blame.”
Why don’t we teach our young mothers how to carry to term with good nutrition???
Cardinals Beat Mets to Win NL Pennant
“With that, the Cardinals earned their second pennant in three years and a date with the Detroit Tigers on Saturday night in Game 1 of the World Series.
Hey Motown, here come the Cards.”
I was a teenager the last time Detroit won the World Series. As a Michigander with tons of ties to Detroit, I am thrilled for my home state. Good Times. Paul and I will prob be watching most of the games with our kids.

Political Vest

In honor of the upcoming election, I put together a Political Vest to wear in public. I plan to wear this with my Anti-Hillary T-Shirt to various outings with my family, as well as Free Republic Events (Freeps), and the various Colorado GOP party events until Mitt Romney has safely landed in the White House.
Here are some pictures:

On the front of the Vest I have an Anti Che picture which I cut out from a T-Shirt and sewed onto the vest. Here is a link to where you can purchase this T-Shirt.

On the back of the vest I sewed this picture of Ronald Reagan, purchased at the same online store. You can purchase it here.
As soon as Mitt Romney officially declares his candidacy, I plan to get some stickers, buttons, etc to put on the vest.
Oh, and I wear this T-Shirt under the vest:
So far I have worn my political stuff to play volleyball, softball, to my son’s soccer game (that struck me as particularly symbolic as we soccer moms seem to be the one’s most talked about during the political season – No Dems, you are not going to tell this soccer Mom how to think and how to vote, and you sure as heck don’t speak for me).
I have had several perplexed people come up to me and ask me why I am against Che. Another person told me that he had a doctorate in Political Science from an Ivy League school and he just didn’t get the Hillary Communism connection. I just smiled at him. After talking to him I decided that perhaps I should have suggested the idea that some important information was left out of his amazingly expensive education. But I didn’t want to hurt his feelings.
Those of us who are politically active republicans often came to our conclusions about politics after a heart felt search to learn the truth about Freedom, Democracy, and the ugliness of Collectivism. I would not want to rob from this newly credentialed young father of three the satisfaction he must be feeling at becoming a “Doctor” in Political Science. The fact that his credentials do little more than qualify him to be the local dog catcher, or perhaps teach politics on some third rate Ivy League Communist Concentration Camp Campus will soon enough become plain to him. But I don’t need to shove his face in it.
I read this piece the other day on Govenor Romney at National Review.
Rockin’ the Evangelical House
“Inside was a largely different story. Romney implored those listening — both inside Tremont Temple Baptist, once part of the Underground Railroad, and those potentioanlly 80 million people (according to FRC) watching across the country via a video simulcast — to “show an outpouring of respect and tolerance for all people, regardless of their differences or their different choices” and to “vigorously reject discrimination.” Due to a technical difficulty, Romney was brought back on stage for a second take. Gently but firmly, the governor emphasized this point — no doubt having heard the more combative speaker who followed his first appearance. “I believe God loves all of his children,” Romney said.
While urging support for a federal marriage amendment that would protect traditional marriage, children were the focus of the governor’s remarks. “Marriage,” Romney said, “is primarily about the nurturing and development of children.” He added, “A child’s development is enhanced by the nurturing of both genders. Every child deserves a mother and a father.” And, driving the point home: “The price for same-sex marriage is paid by children.”
Romney’s presence and focus impressed Lesette Wright, an energetic youth minister at the church. “I was very impressed with what he said about children. He understands.” Talking about how violence and other behavioral problems are often seen in children she works with who come from broken families and families with no father present, she said of Romney’s remarks, “That pain is real.”
Romney’s appearance stood in stark contrast with others in the Massachusetts statehouse who are working against marriage, Boston resident Kym Ayala told NRO. “He was wonderful…. We need politicians fighting that fight.” “It was amazing to see him and his wife stand here right with us for the family. He was the highlight of the evening,” added Linda Strothar.
And what about the much talked about “Mormon problem”? Speaking to the British Times recently, when asked if his religion would be a problem if he chose to run for the White House, Romney said: “People used to wonder whether a divorced actor could be elected … or whether a Mormon could win Massachusetts, a state that is 55% Catholic.”
He continued, “There was probably a time when people cared which church you went to, but that’s past. People today look to see a person’s faith in the way they live in their home with their family.”
I will be working hard these next two years to help get Gov. Romney elected to the presidency.
