Gospel Principles Lesson 6 – The Fall of Adam and Eve

I am preparing my lesson for sunday school today and thought I would share the text of the lesson with my Blog readers.
This has been a busy week. I am directing the Road Show for our Young Men and Women, and we had rehearsals on thursday, plus I did all my visiting teaching, and had several school appointments, parent teachers conferences for Andrew, and a meeting with the director of the spring musical at the school. I am probably going to be the musical director for the show.
Anyway, it has been a busy, fun week, and we were so pleased to receive report cards in the mail for Shelly (3.9 GPA), Allison (3.4 GPA) and Jeff who had a (3.7 GPA). The children have worked hard and we were very happy for the grades they all received.
Our lesson this week is on Adam and Eve and the Fall. I’m anticipating a good discussion in class.
If any of my blog readers are local and would like to attend, the sunday meetings are open to the public and visitors are welcome. The class will begin at about 12:15 this sunday noon, and the church is located in Louisville Colorado on south boulder road.
When you come into the church just ask someone for the missionary/new member class, and they will lead you to the classroom. Most people wear sunday best to church.

The Fall of Adam and Eve
Chapter 6

Adam and Eve Were the First to Come to Earth

31110, Gospel Principles, Unit Two: Leaving the Presence of God, 6: The Fall of Adam and Eve, Adam and Eve Were the First to Come to Earth, 31

God prepared this earth as a home for his children. Adam and Eve were chosen to be the first people to live on the earth (see Moses 1:34). Their part in our Father’s plan was to bring mortality into the world. They were to be the first parents. (See D&C 107:54–56.)

Discussion

•     Read D&C 107:54–56. Who was Adam? What was he chosen to do?

Adam and Eve Were Valiant Spirits

Adam and Eve were among our Father’s noblest children. In the spirit world Adam was called Michael the Archangel (see D&C 27:11; Jude 1:9). He was chosen by our Heavenly Father to lead the righteous in the battle against Satan (see Revelation 12:7–9). Adam and Eve were foreordained to become the parents of the human race. The Lord promised Adam great blessings: “I have set thee to be at the head; a multitude of nations shall come of thee, and thou art a prince over them forever” (D&C 107:55).

Although the scriptures do not tell us anything about Eve before she came to earth, she must have been a choice daughter of God. She was called Eve because she was the mother of all living (see Moses 4:26). She was given to Adam because God said “it was not good that the man should be alone” (Moses 3:18). She shared Adam’s responsibility and will also share his eternal blessings.

Discussion

•     Read Revelation 12:7–9. How did Adam (Michael) prove that he was a valiant spirit?

•     Why was Eve given to Adam?

The Garden of Eden

When Adam and Eve were placed in the Garden of Eden, they were not yet mortal. They were not able to have children. There was no death. They had physical life because their spirits were housed in physical bodies made from the dust of the earth (see Abraham 5:7). They had spiritual life because they were in the presence of God (see Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p. 268). They had not yet made a choice between good and evil.

God commanded them to have children and to learn to control the earth. He said, “Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it, and have dominion over … every living thing that moveth upon the earth” (Moses 2:28). God told them they could freely eat of every tree in the garden except one, the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Of that tree God said, “In the day thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die” (Moses 3:17).

Satan, not knowing the mind of God but seeking to destroy God’s plan, came to Eve in the Garden of Eden. He tempted her to eat of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. He assured her that she and Adam would not die, but that they would “be as gods, knowing good and evil” (Moses 4:11). Eve yielded to the temptation and ate the fruit. When Adam learned what had happened, he chose to partake also. The changes that came upon Adam and Eve because they ate the fruit are called the Fall.

Discussion

•     Read Moses 4:6–32. How was the Garden of Eden different from the world as we know it?

•     Discuss the conditions of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

Adam and Eve’s Separation from God

Because Adam and Eve had eaten the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, the Lord sent them out of the Garden of Eden into the world as we now know it. Their physical condition changed as a result of their eating the forbidden fruit. As God had promised, they became mortal. They were able to have children. They and their children would experience sickness, pain, and physical death.

Because of their transgression, Adam and Eve also suffered spiritual death. This meant they and their children could not walk and talk face to face with God. Because Satan had introduced evil into the world, Adam and Eve and their children were separated from God both physically and spiritually.

Discussion

•     As a result of their transgression, what physical change occurred in Adam and Eve? What spiritual change occurred?

•     Read Moses 5:1–5. What was life like for Adam and Eve outside the Garden of Eden?

Great Blessings Resulted from the Transgression

Some people believe Adam and Eve committed a serious sin when they ate of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. However, latter-day scriptures help us understand that their fall was a necessary step in the plan of life and a great blessing to all of us. Because of the Fall, we are blessed with physical bodies, the right to choose between good and evil, and the opportunity to gain eternal life. None of these privileges would have been ours had Adam and Eve remained in the garden.

After the Fall, Eve said, “Were it not for our transgression we never should have had seed [children], and never should have known good and evil, and the joy of our redemption, and the eternal life which God giveth unto all the obedient” (Moses 5:11).

The prophet Lehi explained:

“And now, behold, if Adam had not transgressed he would not have fallen [been cut off from the presence of God], but he would have remained in the Garden of Eden. And all things which were created must have remained in the same state in which they were after they were created; …

“And they would have had no children; wherefore they would have remained in a state of innocence, having no joy, for they knew no misery; doing no good, for they knew no sin.

“But behold, all things have been done in the wisdom of him who knoweth all things.

“Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy” (2 Nephi 2:22–25).

Discussion

•     Read Moses 5:6–12. After the Fall, how did Adam and Eve feel about their transgression and the Lord’s promise to redeem them?

Additional Scriptures

•     1 Nephi 5:11; 2 Nephi 2:20 (Adam and Eve first parents, family)

•     2 Nephi 2:14–21 (opposition and the Fall; life a probation)

•     2 Nephi 2:22–26 (Fall part of the plan of salvation)

Deadly Newborn Lung Ailment Linked to Late-Pregnancy Depression Drugs

“Feb. 8, 2006 — Babies whose mothers took antidepressant drugs in the second half of pregnancy are six times more likely to have a rare but dangerous lung ailment, a new study suggests.
One study isn’t proof. But it’s strong evidence that taking SSRI antidepressants — such as Prozac, Zoloft, and Paxil — carries an extra risk during pregnancy.
The risk is that the babies will have PPHN: persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn. Only one or two in a thousand babies get this, but it’s very serious. It kills about one in 10 babies who get it. In moderately severe cases, half the survivors suffer hearing loss or brain damage.
“We find these results very concerning,” Sandra L. Kweder, MD, deputy director of the FDA’s office of new drugs, said in an unusual, hastily called news conference. “We find the reported association of SSRI antidepressants with this very serious condition to be very worrisome.”

Study: Frankincense may fight some cancers

“A Virginia Tech scientist says frankincense oil might be useful in treating malignant melanoma — an aggressive cancer that attacks humans and equines.
Approximately 54,000 malignant melanoma cases are diagnosed annually, according to the American Cancer Society, and there are many similarities between malignant melanoma in horses and malignant melanoma in people.
Recognizing the opportunity for translational research, John Robertson, a professor in the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech, has been studying the disease and an experimental treatment involving frankincense oil.”

I am an online Distributor for Young Living Essential Oils, which I have used in my home for the past nine years. If you would like more information about Essential Oils and what they can do for the health of your family, please go here
Frankincense Essential oil (Boswellia carteri) has a sweet, warm, balsamic aroma that is stimulating and elevating to the mind. Useful for visualizing, improving one’s spiritual connection, and centering, it has comforting properties that help with focusing the mind and overcoming stress and despair.
Frankincense is considered a holy anointing oil in the Middle East, where it has been used in religious ceremonies for thousands of years. More recently, it has been used therapeutically in European and American hospitals and is the subject of substantial research. Frankincense is also a valuable ingredient in skin care products for aging and dry skin. The ancient Egyptians used it in rejuvenation face masks.

Extraordinary Breastfeeding

Written by Veronika Robinson, Editor, The Mother magazine ~ as seen on Richard and Judy, Channel Four, February 1st, 2006
“My family’s story is simple. We chose to let our daughters wean themselves when they were ready. They both weaned at a similar age. Bethany was seven (despite stating on the documentary that she was five) and Eliza was a couple of months shy of her eighth birthday. Bethany drew huge media attention by the fact she requested to breastfeed for a 9th birthday present. The media played on her statement that breastmilk is better than a million melons. Better than mango, even.
In the media frenzy around the publicity, there were many factual errors. The Daily Mail, to whom I gave an interview, fabricated quotes left, right and centre and in one particular quote, wrote the exact opposite of what I said. They hounded me for a family photo on the day of my mother in law’s funeral. Not only was my story fabricated, but the other two women involved also had their stories altered in favour of how the Daily Mail thinks their stories should be! In Sophie’s case, they stated (wrongly) that breastfeeding caused the break-up of her first marriage.
I also gave an exclusive interview to NOW magazine by email, but they too, sadly, managed to misquote and change the tone of what I said, despite it being written in black and white.
It was an honour to be a guest on the Richard and Judy show a few hours before the documentary went to air. They publicly stated that they could find no medical or psychology expert to come out against full term breastfeeding. Of course they couldn’t! Studies show that it is psychologically beneficial to breastfeed this way.”
The longest I have breastfed a child was my oldest daughter Allison who was four and a half when I pried her off. I would have let her continue, but I was expecting my fourth and still nursing Jeff, and just felt like I was overwhelmed being pregnant and nursing two children. She did NOT want to wean, but we convinced her it was best for the new baby.
I am still nursing three year old Ben. He just loves to nurse all day long.
I was a columnist for Veronikas magazine for a couple months. Subscribe if you can, it is an excellent introduction to all facets of natural Mothering.

“Helen Neumann remembers running into her parents’ bedroom during a nighttime thunderstorm and climbing into their bed. Four years old, she opened the snaps of her mother’s flowered flannel nightgown and nursed. “I remember it as warmth,” explains Helen, who lives in Iowa City. “The flannel was soft; I felt safe there.”
Although her older sister weaned herself at 11 months, Helen continued to nurse at night until she was about five years old. Now, at age 30, with a baby of her own, Helen is still close to her mother, talking to her on the phone almost every day and visiting frequently.”

Study – Low Fat diet won’t stop heart disease or cancer

“The largest study ever to ask whether a low-fat diet reduces the risk of getting cancer or heart disease has found that the diet has no effect.
The $415 million federal study involved nearly 49,000 women ages 50 to 79 who were followed for eight years. In the end, those assigned to a low-fat diet had the same rates of breast cancer, colon cancer, heart attacks and strokes as those who ate whatever they pleased, researchers are reporting today.”
Weston Price could have told you that a hundred years ago…
Check out his site.
Confused about fats?
I use the principles outlined in Price’s book Nutrition and Physical degeneration as well as Sally Fallon’s cookbook Nourishing Traditions
I wonder how many women have developed cancer and heart disease over the past decades because of the no fat fads???
I feed my family high quality fats all day long; Whole milk, butter, olive oil, and flax oil being the mainstay of our diet, with bone broth soups and stews, and fresh organic cream rounding out our sources for quality fats.
