Phyllis Schlafly
“When the feminist movement burst onto the American social scene in the 1970s, the rallying cry was “liberation.” The feminists demanded liberation from the role of the housewife and mother who lived in what Betty Friedan famously labeled a “comfortable concentration camp.”
Feminist ideology taught that the duties of the housewife and mother were (in Friedan’s words) “endless, monotonous, unrewarding” and “peculiarly suited to the capacities of feeble-minded girls.” Society’s expectation that a mother should care for her own children was cited as oppression of women by our male-dominated patriarchal society from which women must be liberated so they can achieve fulfillment in workforce careers just like men.
Articulating vintage feminism in the 1974 Harvard Educational Review, Hillary Clinton wrote disparagingly about wives who are in “a dependency relationship” which, she said, is akin to “slavery and the Indian reservation system.”
Demanding that husbands take on equal duties in child care, the National Organization for Women passed resolutions in the 1970s stating, “The father has equal responsibility with the mother for the child care role.””

No evidence cough syrups work: panel
Over-the-counter cough medicines do little good and may harm children, U.S. experts said in new guidelines released on Monday.
Adults are better off using older nonprescription antihistamines and decongestants to stop the flow of mucus that causes the cough, the American College of Chest Physicians said in its guidelines.
“Cough is the number one reason why patients seek medical attention,” Dr. Richard Irwin of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, who chaired the guidelines panel, said in a statement.
“There is no clinical evidence that over-the-counter cough expectorants or suppressants actually relieve cough,” Irwin added.

Provident Living
This saturday I will be teaching a class on Provident Living here in my home in Colorado.
The class will be from 8:30 to 10:30 and we will discuss a variety of issues as well as enjoy some home cooked foods. I always make a loaf of whole grain bread, some muffins, and a pot of Hot Cracked Wheat Cereal. It is fun to see the looks on peoples faces when they taste these simple foods for the first time fresh out of the oven.
Here are some former blog posts on Provident Living.

Essential Oils for sick child
Last night Ben was sick. He threw up his lunch and didn’t look good. He had a pasty look to his skin, and he was low energy, just wanted to sit on the couch tired. I put him to bed at 6:00 PM and he slept soundly until about 2 am.
When he woke up he was very hot. His fever was all over his body and his feet felt like paper. I immediately started putting essential oils on his feet. I used Thyme, Aroma Seize, Immupower, and Peppermint all over his feet, spine, and hands. I massaged his feet with olive oil covering the essential oils. Then I massaged his spine and tummy gently with peppermint, which has a fever reducing effect.
All of a sudden he sat up and said he wanted to take a bath. Just as I was putting him in the tub, and before I took off his diaper, he said “wait, I have to pee”. Then he peed and took off his diaper and jumped in the tub. He was still hot, but his demeanor had changed to much more alert and awake, whereas before the massage he was listless and talking about things that made no sense.
I sniffed his diaper and it really stunk, and it was like he had expelled some nasty fluids out of his body.
I poured about two cups of epsom salts into his bath water, along with this combination of oils; Three drops of Valor, two of Frankincense, two of Joy, Two of Harmony, one of Myrrh, and ten of White Angelica. Then I carefully dropped two drops of Exodus II into the back of the bath. It contains cinnamon, and needs to be used carefully so as not to burn the skin.
Then I put our bath gloves on and srubbed his skin with Dr. Bronners peppermint soap. I focused on his feet and spine. I let him soak in the bath for a couple minutes and then took him out to give him a second massage.
This time I started with a valor balance on his feet, then added oregano, peppermint, and immupower to his feet and spine. I covered these with Olive Oil, and then massaged his feet, really focusing on his digestive reflex areas. I finished the massage with peppermint to the spine and di-tone to the tummy and used olive oil all over his skin. Then I put on a clean diaper, and his jammies, and we both fell asleep about 3 am. He slept soundly until 5 am, when he woke me up and told me he was hungry.
We came downstairs and I cut him up some fresh pinapple, and made what he calls “yellow milk”. This is a hot spiced cows milk drink that I use alot when I am post partum. We ate some pinapple together and he is right now drinking his yellow milk. He has no fever, and he is normal personality, with lots of energy.
I know of many people in my community who are ill. Whooping cough has been especially bad, and yesterday when I was visiting teaching a friend told me that she knew of someone who was sent home from the doctor with no medicine because they had a virus and the doc did not have anything for them to use, as anti-biotics are not for viruses. I often think of these sorts of mothers who have a sick child, take the time and energy to go to the doctor, and are sent home with no practical help.
I can think of dozens of helpful things those moms can do wether the child is sick with a bacterial infection or a virus.
Before the cold and flu season started I put in a supply of good anti-viral essential oils. I keep epsom salts on hand, and always lots of fresh fruit. I don’t know wether Ben had a virus, bacteria, or a parasitic infection. I don’t really care. The early vomiting told me his body was feeling the need to purge something from his digestive tract. The fever told me his immune system had kicked in feeling the need to additionally purge, and the nasty toxic scent of his urine told me his second kidneys were in need of being cleaned.
What are the second kidneys??? The skin. Keeping skin clean and well scrubbed is one way of aiding the kidneys in their de-toxifying function. Many toxins are passed out of the skin, especially when one has a fever. Which is why I gave him the bath (he also requested this bath) – children most often know exactly what they need in terms of food, water, etc..
I plan to watch him closely today, feed him a light diet of fresh fruit and whatever healthy food he desires. Last night before he went to sleep he asked me to make some oatmeal for him. So I made up a little. He ate a few bites and then he said that he needed to stop because he didn’t want to barf again.
I really trust my children’s own internal wisdom, except when that “wisdom” is craving candy and sweets (but when that happens I know they are protein deficient and needing extra nutrients).
Ben “guided” me through his illness by showing me with his symptoms and his words what he needed. I also had the oils on hand to help him with his infection.
I would encourage every family to have on hand a supply of basic essential oils to help with the cold and flu season. I used a huge variety and amount of oils on my three year old last night. Some healers would be scandalized to know how many drops (all told probably 50 total drops of oil) and in what combinations I used them, but I do not have any caution or concern about using these oils on this child. I used upwards of 100 drops a day during my pregnancy with him and I know how his body responds to them.
They are literally pure energy/electricity and intelligence in every drop of oil.

Sunday School Lesson 4 – Agency – Freedom to Choose
This past sunday I taught this class on Agency to my sunday school students. We had a spirited discussion and after reading 2 Nephi chapter 2, we got into a debate about the Fall of Adam. Some felt that Adam and Eve made their choice knowing exactly what they were doing and what was going to happen to them as a consequence of their transgression, and some in the class felt that they were innocent and did not fully understand the ramifications of the choice to partake of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
I was definitely on the side that believed they fully knew what they were doing when they decided to partake, but since we had such a lengthy debate, we decided to come back to the same lesson next week and try to sort it out.
Here is the text of the lesson, for your enjoyment.

Freedom to Choose
Chapter 4
31110, Gospel Principles, Unit One: Our Premortal Life with God, 4: Freedom to Choose, 21
“Thou mayest choose for thyself, for it is given unto thee” (Moses 3:17).
God has told us through his prophets that we are free to choose between good and evil. We may choose liberty and eternal life by following Jesus Christ. We are also free to choose captivity and death by following Satan. (See 2 Nephi 2:27.) The right to choose between good and evil is called agency.
Agency Is an Eternal Principle
In the premortal life we were free agents. That means we had power to act for ourselves (see D&C 93:29–30). One purpose of earth life is to show what choices we will make (see 2 Nephi 2:15–16). If we were forced to choose the right, we would not be able to show what we would choose for ourselves. Also, we are happier doing things when we have made our own choices.
Agency may have been one of the first issues to arise in the premortal council in heaven. It was one of the main causes of the conflict between the followers of Christ and the followers of Satan. Satan said he would bring all of us back to our Father’s presence, but he would have taken away our agency. When his offer was rejected, he rebelled and was cast out of heaven with his followers (see D&C 29:36–37).
Discussion
• Ask class members to compare the feelings the words force and choice bring to mind.
Agency Is a Necessary Part of the Plan of Salvation
Agency makes our life on earth a period of testing. When planning the mortal creation of his children, God said, “We will prove [test] them herewith, to see if they will do all things whatsoever the Lord their God shall command them” (Abraham 3:25). Without the gift of agency, we would have been unable to show our Heavenly Father whether we would do all that he commanded us. Because we are able to choose, we are responsible for our actions (see Helaman 14:30–31).
When we choose to live according to God’s plan for us, our agency is strengthened. Right choices increase our power to make more right choices.
As we obey each of our Father’s commandments, we grow in wisdom and strength of character. Our faith increases. We find it easier to make right choices.
We began to make choices as spirit children in our Heavenly Father’s presence. Our choices there made us worthy to come to earth. Our Heavenly Father wants us to grow in faith, power, knowledge, wisdom, and all other good things. If we keep his commandments and make right choices, we will learn and understand. We will become like him. (See D&C 93:28.)
Discussion
• Read Moses 3:17 and Joshua 24:14–15. What choices have you made this week? Did these choices bring you closer to the Lord?
• Why is agency necessary?
• Read 2 Nephi 28:30. How does making right choices help us make more right choices?
Agency Requires That There Be a Choice
We cannot choose unless the opposites of good and evil are placed before us. Lehi, a great Book of Mormon prophet, told his son that in order to bring about the eternal purposes of God, there must be “an opposition in all things. If not so, … righteousness could not be brought to pass, neither wickedness, neither holiness nor misery, neither good nor bad” (2 Nephi 2:11).
God allows Satan to oppose the good. God said of Satan:
“I caused that he should be cast down;
“And he became Satan, yea, even the devil, the father of all lies, to deceive and to blind men, and to lead them captive at his will, even as many as would not hearken unto my voice” (Moses 4:3–4).
Satan does all he can to destroy God’s work. He seeks “the misery of all mankind, … for he seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself” (2 Nephi 2:18, 2 Nephi 2:27). He does not love us. He does not want any good thing for us. He does not want us to be happy. He wants to make us his slaves. He uses many disguises to capture us.
When we follow the temptations of Satan, we limit our choices. The following example suggests how this works. Imagine seeing a sign on the seashore that reads: “Dangerwhirlpool. No swimming allowed here.” We might think that is a restriction. But is it? We still have many choices. We are free to swim somewhere else. We are free to walk along the beach and pick up seashells. We are free to watch the sunset. We are free to go home. We are also free to ignore the sign and swim in the dangerous place. But once the whirlpool has us in its grasp and we are pulled under, we have very few choices. We can try to escape, or we can call for help, but we may drown.
Even though we are free to choose our course of action, we are not free to choose the consequences of our actions. The consequences, whether good or bad, follow as a natural result of any choice we make (see Revelation 22:12). If we touch a hot flame, for example, we are burned.
Heavenly Father has told us how to escape the captivity of Satan. We must watch and pray always, asking God to help us withstand the temptations of Satan (see 3 Nephi 18:15). Our Heavenly Father will not allow us to be tempted beyond our power to resist (see 1 Corinthians 10:13).
God’s commandments direct us away from danger and toward eternal life. By choosing wisely, we will gain exaltation, progress eternally, and enjoy perfect happiness (see 2 Nephi 2:27–28).
Discussion
• Place a treat within the reach of someone. Loosely wrap a cord around him, binding his arms to his body. Ask him if he can reach the treat. Tighten the cord so the person is bound. Explain that sin and ignorance also interfere with agency and prevent us from receiving blessings from God. Discuss how repentance and righteous living free us from the bondage of sin.
• Why is opposition necessary? See 2 Nephi 2:15–16.
• Read 2 Nephi 2:28. How can you choose eternal life?
