Giving Birth during a Bird flu Pandemic

I’ve been doing some research on the Bird Flu after reading this article linked from Drudge:
Go Here
I skimmed through it and then read it again much more slowly, I felt like it was a topic worth blogging about. So did Hugh…
The telling lines from the article for me were these:
“As for the hospitals, there would be scenes like the ones this past month in the stadiums of New Orleans and Houston after Hurricane Katrina.
“There wouldn’t be equipment and personnel to staff them adequately that you could really call them a hospital,” Garrett predicts. “You might more or less call them warehouses for the ailing.”
And, as happened in New Orleans, there would be no place for the dead.
“If you look at the expected number of deaths that could occur in cities across the United States, we are wholly unprepared to process those bodies in a dignified and respectful way,” asserts Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy. “We will run out of caskets literally within days.”
The prospects have become so bleak that in planning meetings held in New York City, veteran emergency responders have walked away.
“They just don’t know how we’re going to get through,” says Osterholm of those responders. “If we have a repeat of the 1918 life experience, I can’t imagine anything to be closer to a living hell than that experience of 12 to 24 months of pandemic influenza.”
For the six to eight million women in America who might give birth during a 24 month pandemic, I doubt many of them would be willing to go into a “warehouse for the ailing” in order to give birth.
Sisters, you have options! Please start reading now about how to give birth and breastfeed at home, and please start storing some food, water, and natural medicines in case the flu comes to your home.
I have written quite a bit on these topics, and some good places to start when researching are here, here, and here.

“What is the risk to humans from the H5N1 virus in Asia?
The H5N1 virus does not usually infect humans. In 1997, however, the first case of spread from a bird to a human was seen during an outbreak of bird flu in poultry in Hong Kong. The virus caused severe respiratory illness in 18 people, 6 of whom died. Since that time, there have been other cases of H5N1 infection among humans.
Most recently, human cases of H5N1 infection have occurred in Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia during large H5N1 outbreaks in poultry. The death rate for these reported cases has been about 50 percent. Most of these cases occurred from contact with infected poultry or contaminated surfaces; however, it is thought that a few cases of human-to-human spread of H5N1 have occurred.
So far, spread of H5N1 virus from person to person has been rare and spread has not continued beyond one person. However, because all influenza viruses have the ability to change, scientists are concerned that the H5N1 virus could one day be able to infect humans and spread easily from one person to another.
Because these viruses do not commonly infect humans, there is little or no immune protection against them in the human population.
If the H5N1 virus were able to infect people and spread easily from person to person, an “influenza pandemic” (worldwide outbreak of disease) could begin. No one can predict when a pandemic might occur. However, experts from around the world are watching the H5N1 situation in Asia very closely and are preparing for the possibility that the virus may begin to spread more easily and widely from person to person.”

For the record: Even if I was infected with this nasty flu, I would not use the vaccine or the anti-viral drugs the government is scrambling to purchase. I would confidently follow the steps outlined in my flu column, and use my essential oils, and keep our family quarantined at home and only leave my home if I was covered with Essential Oils.
A nice little legend gives me comfort. It is the story of the Thieves. Those spice merchants and purfumers who would bath themselves in the powerful anti-viral oils of Cinnamon and Clove and then would go out to rob the bodies of the dead from the european Plagues. They would bathe themselves after arriving at home and lived, even after being exposed to the disease from the corpses whose pockets they picked.
I have no intention of picking pockets, but if I need leave my home for any reason, I will bathe in the oils, and carry a face mask with the thieves oils infused into it to protect my airways. You can also purchase these powerful anti-viral oils. Go Here

THIEVES ESSENTIAL OIL BLEND
Ingredients: Clove (Syzygium aromaticum), lemon (Citrus limon), cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum), Eucalyptus radiata and rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis CT 1,8 cineol).
Thieves® was created based on research about four thieves in France who protected themselves with cloves, rosemary, and other aromatics while robbing plague victims. This proprietary blend was university tested and found to be highly effective in supporting the immune system and good health.
I will be teaching a class on Essential Oils next week here in my home in Boulder. For more information Go Here
I believe Liberals and Conservatives alike are setting themselves up for a Hurricane Katrina like blame game if and when this flu becomes a world wide phenomenon. Those who are writing about it in the Blogosphere are treating the Vaccines and Anti-Virals as the be all, end all. It is just residual thinking from the 20th century conspiracies of the Medical Profession, that the only way to treat illness is with toxic chemicals.
I can think of dozens of home remedies and treatments that can be used to strengthen the immune system, treat respiratory infections, and deal with this deadly flu that have nothing to do with Chemicals. Please take some time to learn for yourself the Natural Home remedies that you can use to help yourself.
Even if the government is able to get enough vaccine and anti-virals to help the people of America, who says you and your family are going to be able to purchase them? Or get them in time to help if someone is deathly ill in a matter of hours??? Or if your whole family is sickened at once, how do you know you will have the wherewithall to get out of your home and get the supposedly essential supplies???
Garlic Soup, Common sense prevention, Powerful Natural Medicine in the form of Essential Oils, and being willing to take personal responsibility will serve your family far better than getting in line for some governmental services that in the end may offer far too little, too late.
Please, take the time to get educated on the simple measures that can be taken NOW! Cold and Flu season is right around the corner!
PS Don’t let your kids go trick or treating….This one holiday that happens yearly on the eve of the Flu season sets most of America up for a complete immune system breakdown when all that candy is ingested quickly. Our family simply stays home and watches a movie on halloween night.

“Word of caution
Some observers are urging caution amid growing discussion of “doomsday scenarios.”
Bill Mattos, president of the California Poultry Federation, writing in the Modesto Bee, acknowledged the virus is a serious disease for bird species capable of causing illness and death in humans.
But he noted the virus has not been detected in North America despite its presence in Asia since 1996.”
I always wonder if the Big Pharma companies who manufacture vaccine and anti virals are behind these types of chicken little “The sky is falling” articles etc… Especially since that WND article had an ad for Tamiflu right in the body of the article.
I can hear boardroom types snickering at the gullibility of the American People. But I was just reading this chapter in the Book of Mormon with my family, and I just thought, “well, even if this bird flu, or Sars, or Aids, or whatever is a source of toxin that makes many people ill, the bottom line is that we all should be doing things to strengthen our immune systems, and to be prepared should a pandemic suddenly come upon the world.

Judiciary – Thoughts on Roberts and Constitution Day

Go Here
One of my favorite online weekly emails comes from The Federalist Patriot, the Conservative Journal of Record. For subscription to this excellent publication which comes in email form, and also can be read in a PDF format Go Here
I love reading the Federalist Patriot simply because they take the top stories, quotes, and analysis each week, and in a concise and often funny way, share the news from a conservative perspective. The insights shared were particularly spot on during the recent presidential election.
And I highly recomend this publication to anyone who would like to balance news coverage from the Main Stream Media, which tends to look at things from a Marxist perspective. All of the writers for FP are Patriots who love God, Family, and Country.
In honor of Constitution day tomorow, when we as a Nation Celebrate the 218th anniversary of the ratification of this amazing document, I share these quotes, links, and insights to encourage you the reader to up your knowledge of the Constitution of the United States of America.
Jenny Hatch
Quotes from the most recent Publication:
“QUOTE OF THE WEEK…
“I have no platform. Judges are not politicians who can promise
to do certain things in exchange for votes. Judges are like
umpires. They don’t make rules, they apply them… The
primary check on the courts has always been judicial
self-restraint.” —Judge John Roberts before the Senate Judiciary
Committee”
“Just how important is it that President George Bush’s Constitutional-constructionist nominees be confirmed? It is more important than anything else this administration could hope to accomplish. The future of the Republic is riding on these confirmations.
The Federalist Papers, as the definitive explication of our Constitution’s original intent, clearly define original intent in regards to Constitutional interpretation. In Federalist No. 78 Alexander Hamilton writes, “[The Judicial Branch] may truly be said to have neither FORCE nor WILL, but merely judgment…liberty can have nothing to fear from the judiciary alone, but would have everything to fear from its union with either of the other departments.”
In Federalist No. 81 Hamilton notes, “[T]here is not a syllable in the [Constitution] which directly empowers the national courts to construe the laws according to the spirit of the Constitution…”
George Washington advised, “The basis of our political systems is the right of the people to make and to alter their Constitutions of Government. But the Constitution which at any time exists, ’till changed by an explicit and authentic act of the whole People is sacredly obligatory upon all.”
Today, 218 years hence, Justice Antonin Scalia says of judicial activism, “As long as judges tinker with the Constitution to ‘do what the people want,’ instead of what the document actually commands, politicians who pick and confirm new federal judges will naturally want only those who agree with them politically.””
“Liberals can’t win on abortion, gay marriage and bans on the Pledge of Allegiance by allowing Americans to vote. That’s why they need the courts to keep inventing rights to abortion, gay marriage and bans on the Pledge of Allegiance. Normal liberals know that, which is why they duck honest argument. But the crazy liberals don’t. That’s why Bush needs to concentrate on luring them out of their cages. It takes so little to provoke them! Just let us know before Bush nominates Janice Rogers Brown to the Supreme Court so we can arrange for live TV coverage of George Soros’s head exploding, OK?” —Ann Coulter
“From the “Village Academic Curriculum” File…
The academic Left has long pounded their ideological nonsense into young college minds with the support of billions of dollars a year nationwide. For many years now, polls indicate that the longer a kid is a student, the more Marxist he becomes.
After all, PhDs vote overwhelmingly Democrat, contrary to their intelligence. Yet, in spite of all of this firepower, the Left is worried that some conservative groups are gaining inroads in America’s campuses. There are only perhaps a half dozen conservative organizations such as the Leadership Institute, the Young Americans Foundation and the Intercollegiate Studies Institute which are beginning to have an effect on campus.
The combined budget of these groups is somewhere in the neighborhood of $25 to $30 million—a far cry from the war chest of their opponents. However, Morton Blackwell, head of the Leadership Institute, which thrives on 300 campuses, puts it: “We are easily outspent 50 to 1. I’m honestly not worried about George Soros putting another $1 billion into leftwing political activities on campus. They have no idea how to spend the billions they already control.” This, we hope, is a little encouraging news on the warfront with Academentia.”

The Deadly Influence of Formula in America

Go Here
By Dr. Linda Folden Palmer
“A recent study published in the journal Pediatrics, (May 2004), titled “Breastfeeding and the Risk of Postneonatal Death in the United States,” reports a 21% reduction in infant death for having EVER breastfed.
When they compare 3 months of any breastfeeding to less or no breastfeeding, the reported reduction is 36%. That’s 36% fewer infant deaths! If they were to compare 3 months of exclusive breastfeeding to no breastmilk, their number would have been closer to 50%.”
“This brings us face to face with the safety and effectiveness of infant formula as a breast milk substitute. Is formula actually as safe as we have been led to believe? In fact, the answer is a resounding “no.” In fact, the use of infant formula doubles the risk of infant death for American babies.”
“Below are the percentages and total numbers of U.S. infants who die from various leading causes, according to the 1999 National Vital Statistics Reports.
Total U.S. births in 1999: 4,000,000
Total U.S. infant deaths in 1999: 28,000
20% Congenital abnormalities (birth defects) 5,500
16% Low birth weight and premature birth 4,500
10% Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) 2,700
8.5% Complications during pregnancy and birth 2,400
6% Respiratory distress: lung collapse, influenza, pneumonia 1,750
3% Accidents (unintentional injuries) 850
2.5% Bacterial sepsis (infections) 700
2.4% Circulatory system diseases 650
1.4% Necrotizing enterocolitis 400
1% Intestinal inflammations (diarrhea) 300
0.3% Meningitis 100
0.3% Cancer 100
Numbers account for 70% of total infant deaths”
“Answering the Detractors
Criticisms are often spread about studies that find increased illness and death rates associated with formula feeding. For just this reason, each later study aggressively attempts to take into account any factors that have been purported as distorting previous study outcomes.
These research papers address as many aspects as possible, from maternal education, to smoking, to income level, to day care usage and many more possibilities. The results continue to reveal the risks of formula feeding.
It’s commonly said that formula feeding does not risk lives in industrialized nations where education and medical advances prevent increased deaths. The evidence is quite to the contrary. Some insist that the blame for the United States’ relatively high infant death rate lies with underprivileged communities.
Again, it has been shown that elevated death rates among U.S. blacks cannot be attributed to poverty. Hispanic Americans rank similarly to African-American populations for socio-economic factors, but they match non-Hispanic whites in their lower infant mortality rates. The difference is not socio-economic; rather, it’s in rates of formula use versus breastfeeding.
A New York study sought to establish the connection between education, income and infant survival. It concluded strongly that the number of illnesses is increased by two to three times in formula-fed babies regardless of socioeconomic status or level of parental education.
A later study in Israel confirmed the effects of formula feeding across all classes and education levels. The most recent analysis of this issue, again performed in the United States, reiterated that higher illness rates among formula-fed or formula-supplemented infants “did not differ among income groups.””
“What Your Doctor Doesn’t Tell You
Pediatricians spend much time frightening parents with 1 in 100,000 risks from vaccine-preventable diseases when parents question the utility and safety of vaccines. “Would you want to risk the life of your child?” they demand.
Yet these very same professionals offer formula samples with the other hand — when the magnitude of health risks associated with the use of formula is 500 times greater.
Parenting is all about making choices and weighing risks and benefits. Many parents need to make the riskier choice of formula feeding in order to balance other factors that benefit the family.
Yet some parents who have lost their children, possibly based on pediatric advice condoning or encouraging formula-feeding, would surely wish that they had been informed of the very real risks related to using formula.”

Rotating Food Storage

For years I have been trying to find an easy way to rotate our food. I have used a variety of food containers, and after much trial and error, have finally come up with the system that seems to work best.
I purchsed Restaurant Quality containers that stack and are see through at Sam’s Club. These containers will hold ten to fifteen pounds of food. Which translates into holding the wheat from two and a half number 10 cans. I love being able to put so much food into the containers, and being able to see how much is left, as it helps me to know which foods need to be replaced when I am lugging cans up from the basement.
Here is a photo of my kitchen Food Storage Shelves. (And I do have additional Foods in bins at various locations around the kitchen)
Food Shelves #1.jpg
The bins contain a variety of foods:
White Wheat
Red Wheat
Black Beans
Brown Basmati Rice
Kamut
White Flour
Spelt
Whole Oat Groats
Brown Sugar
Quinoa
Flax Seed
Powdered Milk
White Sugar
Refried Bean mix
Yellow Corn
Pasta
Oatmeal
Pinto Beans
etc..
Food Shelves #2.jpg
Here are the shelves from a different perspective:
Food Shelves #2.jpg
And the same picture blown up even bigger.
I know this may seem like a huge amount of food on these shelves, but I can easily use up all of the wheat from both the red and white wheat bins in one week! I am constantly refilling these bins, and this is the most user friendly system I have yet come up with.

Making Muffins

Whenever someone asks me what I feed my kids every day, I often reply, “Muffins”. These kid pleasers have been a staple in our family since I first purchased a wheat grinder back in 1989.
I thought I would use this post to outline the steps to making great muffins from scratch. I made up this Vegan Recipe this morning, and took pictures as I went along.
First I started with a simple recipe:
4 C Freshly gound Whole Wheat Flour
1 tsp Sea Salt
1 tsp Baking Soda
1 tsp Baking Powder
1/2 C Brown Sugar
1 Can Pear Sauce (I used Pear sauce because I have several cases of it on hand, but applesauce will also work)
1/2 C Olive Oil
1/2 C Water

Muffins #16 Finished Baked Muffins.jpg
Finished muffins. Just after I pulled these out of the oven, my husband and kids were leaving for the day, and they snatched them up before I could get a picture of the whole pan of finished muffins. This recipe makes two full pans of muffins, and they need to be baked at 375 for twenty minutes.
