Big Hollywood Blog: Why Does Tom Hanks Single Out Mormons?

UPDATE:
From this mormon….Apology Accepted.

Tom Hanks says he’s sorry he told FOXNews.com that Mormons who supported California’s constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage were “un-American.”

“Last week, I labeled members of the Mormon church who supported California’s Proposition 8 as ‘un-American,'” the actor said in a statement through his publicist. “I believe Proposition 8 is counter to the promise of our Constitution; it is codified discrimination.”

“But everyone has a right to vote their conscience; nothing could be more American,” the statement continues. “To say members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints who contributed to Proposition 8 are ‘un-American’ creates more division when the time calls for respectful disagreement. No one should use ‘un- American’ lightly or in haste. I did. I should not have.”

Michael van der Galien does a good job parsing the language of Tom Hanks.

“Tom Hanks may be one of the best actors in history, but the real Tom Hanks is an entirely different man altogether. He made headlines today calling Mormons “un-American” because they actively supported Proposition 8, a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

Although this statement may make perfect sense to Hanks, the reality of the matter is that amending a constitution is perfectly American. What’s un-American is legislating from the bench – liberal judges forcing their personal views on the rest of us, as those did who overruled a law banning gay marriage also supported by a majority of Californians.

It is “un-American” to refuse to debate an issue and, instead, to vilify and demonize the other side. Furthermore, it is also distinctly “un-American” for Hanks to call those who dare disagree “un-American.” Lastly, it is even more “un-American” to single out a specific group solely because of their religious views.

Why isn’t Hanks calling African Americans, who voted in large numbers for Prop. 8, “un-American?” Why isn’t Hanks taking aim at Hispanics who also voted against legalizing gay marriage? Is it, perhaps, because liberals like Mr. Hanks only dare attack easy victims like white men, white Christians and white Mormons?”

Great questions Michael, and an even more important one….Aren’t we all ONE?
Sure, except for Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter, and all those nasty wasty anti american Mormons? Except for them, we are all one!
Bleech.

Reason Mag: I knew there was a reason Science Fiction was a favorite!

Tor’s Worlds Without Death or Taxes

“Doherty sold Tor to St. Martin’s in 1986 but maintained editorial control. Although St. Martin’s later became part of the German publishing conglomerate Holtzbrinck, Tor has retained a large degree of independence. This is deliberate, in part because Tor has an unusual editorial process. At most fiction publishing houses, decisions are made by consensus. All the editors, often drawn from many genres, sit down together and decide which authors to sign and how much to spend on promotions and advances. The result, Doherty argues, is an unwillingness to try something new or unusual. Tor decided to do things differently. “We don’t do things by committee and we don’t expect anyone to take care of us,” Doherty says. “We can stray outside the genre as long as they sell. We’ve got to be self-supporting.”

Despite being part of a large multinational publishing concern, Tor sometimes behaves more like a mom-and-pop shop—though not without that profit motive in mind. Doherty’s two daughters work for the company. So when his daughter Kathleen, who was working with Wal-Mart on a literacy promotion program, came to him with a plan to publish cheap copies of classics that were bound and illustrated in ways that appealed to kids instead of teachers, Doherty gave the green light. That order wound up totaling 17.5 million books.

Doherty says he also has given away “hundreds of thousands of copies” of Orson Scott Card’s young adult favorite Ender’s Game over the years, as a kind of science fiction gateway drug. He writes his congressman once a month, just to tell him what’s on his mind. Today he plays the role of grand old man with style—Nielsen Hayden calls him an “old-fashioned captain of industry, entrepreneur type”—presiding over Tor’s burrow from his award-cluttered office in the Flatiron’s pointed end.

Tor enjoys strong name recognition and brand loyalty among fans, thanks to its quirky catalog, industry.”

I love reading the fiction of Orson Scott Card and all of my teens are avid readers of his books.

Fox News: Obama Driving Surge in Gun Sales, Firearms Groups Say

“President-elect Barack Obama’s election has spurred a surge in gun sales, firearms retailers and enthusiasts say, as gun owners brace for what they believe will be a new era of gun control in Washington.

An electronic news service that covers outdoor news has even named Obama its “Gun Salesman of the Year.”

Firearms associations began to suspect that political considerations were driving gun sales late last year as the number of background checks increased. But end-of-year figures showed a big spike in background checks for the last three months of 2008, and in November, the month Obama was elected, the number of background checks was 42 percent greater than in November 2007.

“It’s not a hard tea leaf to read,” said Jim Shepherd, publisher of the news service Outdoor Wire, which claims Obama’s election has “frightened consumers into action.”

John Ziegler’s Exclusive Interview With Sarah Palin

“If someone would have told me five months ago that in early January I would pay over $1,400 for an incredibly inconvenient plane ticket and $120 for a 3 am cab fare to get from sunny Los Angeles to Wasilla, Alaska, I would have told them there was a better chance that the Dow Jones would be below 9,000 and a gallon of gas would be less than two dollars.
