In the end, the cards that Reid still has to play — limited but still potentially effective — are enough to persuade Democrats that he has a shot at cobbling together the 60 votes needed to get a strong bill past the Senate.

But for some progressive, the history of leadership caving to the demands of those who hold out the longest — along with the White House’s desire to simply get some bill passed — loom large over the debate’s remaining weeks.

“They are going to do what they can to get the votes,” said Joe Trippi, a long-time Democratic strategist. “It is really a question of who is going to blink first. And I have to believe that even if they earnestly, all-out fight for [the public plan] they are going to cave in the end.”

“Here is a generation that has never known a time when abortion has been illegal,” said Anna Greenberg, a Democratic pollster who studies attitudes toward abortion. “For many of them, the daily experience is: It’s legal and if you really need one you can probably figure out how to get one. So when we send out e-mail alerts saying, ‘Oh my God, write to your senator,’ it’s hard for young people to have that same sense of urgency.”

By all accounts, the national election in Honduras was a rousing success.  Despite a call to boycott by the small band of remaining supporters of Manuel Zelaya, turnout exceeded 60%.  It produced a clear winner, conservative rancher Porfirio Lobo Sosa, sweeping out the liberal government of both Zelaya and interim caretaker president Roberto Micheletti.
