Just a few words about Miley Cyrus…

It is Labor Day.

I always think of the week of Andrews Birth seventeen years ago as well as my beautiful Blessing Way that we celebrated on Labor Day in 2002 a few weeks before Ben was born, when the first monday in september rolls around.

Whenever I hear the word Labor, I always connect it to birth, babies, and family life.

When I was at BYU I trained for musical theatre at a semi professional level and really wanted to achieve some status as a professional performer.image

Meeting my husband changed things and instead of “Laboring” to create Music I have engaged in the labor of Mothering our five children for these past 25 years.

For many years I ached to be back in rehearsal halls mastering difficult music and choreography while developing my onstage characters.

Despite significant amounts of loving parental encouragement, none of my children has any ambition for musical theatre. They have sung in choirs and have enjoyed working backstage when I directed a show, but except for the random Mormon Ward Roadshow, or a bit part in a play, none of them has the inclination or desire to step out and try for a lead in a show.

While I would love to share my passion for performing more intently with our children, a side of me is very grateful that they have chosen other pursuits and areas of focus to spend their time and energy on. It is a small side of me that trembles when considering my children becoming performers, because I believe we need musicians who are bulletproof when potentially being seduced into the dark side of the Performing Arts.

I know it is possible to be an entertainer while holding fast to morality. My friend Kara Lyn Roundy has done it. But I would not want one of my children sucked into that vortex of darkness before they were mature enough to handle it.

My heart aches for Miley. I saw her image splashed all over the web last week and I wanted to grab a large bathrobe, wrap her in it, and give her a big motherly hug.

That slime who was onstage with her should be arrested for Sexual Assault, Harassment, and Placed in a Stockade while child actors throw rotten vegetables at him for exploiting her.

If Billy Ray would man up and go punch Mr. Thicke in the nose, that would be the healthiest message society could receive at this point, especially the tweens who are currently taking it all in on the web.

If husbands, wives, fathers, and mothers just shrug and say, “Well that is what it takes to make it in the music business when you are in a new media environment”, we are doomed as a society.

imageI have often thought as we rounded the corner into main stream discussion around lewd sex acts in 1998 that if Monica Lewinskys father had gathered together a posse of friends and headed over to the White House for a lynching of Bill Clinton when it became public that he was molesting interns in the White House, we may have headed this wholesale societal jump into the babylonian pit off at the pass.

Even if the vigilantism of a Mr. Cyrus or Mr. Lewinsky resulted in an imprisonment or a violent clash with authorities, the symbolism of Father as Protector of innocent and vulnerable young women would still have been worth the effort…

And it would have been important to a young Miley or Monica to know that the person most responsible for keeping her safe from predators was on task and engaged.

As awful as the spectacle of a Dad giving in to his passions in order to pull his daughter or son out of a dangerous situation may seem, to me, the shrug of “Whatever” as he just ignores the situation is worse.

School Begins: 2013-14, Countdown to Andy leaving home

imageWe started homeschool today. Ben is in fifth grade and Andy drove over to the local high school to register for his senior year.

At this time next year Andy will be making final preparations to leave on his mission. My intention is to spend as much time as is humanely possible with him over the next twelve months.

Andrew has been the easiest child in the world to mother.  He is so lovable and dependable.  From the moment I first held him in my arms I had the sense that I was being given a most sacred trust in being his mother.

As these past seventeen years have clicked by I just feel grateful to my Heavenly Father for putting him in our circle of family love.

Each of our children has been a leap of faith for Paul and I, especially since I have struggled so much with post partum emotional illness.

After we had our third child we felt overwhelmed and not sure if we could have another child.  About seven months before Andy was conceived I was in the Denver Temple and I had a most sacred experience as his spirit connected with mine and he told me that he would like me to be his Mother, but he needed to be born soon as the timing of his life on the earth was important.

I have never experienced so much spiritual warfare as the seven months before his conception, it felt like all of the gates of hell had opened and were waiting to engulf me in a blaze of destruction.  I also had the odd experience of many different people coming to me privately and telling me that they did not think I should have any more children.

During his pregnancy I again felt this incredible spiritual warfare, my dreams were all around end times events, and although I experienced many miracles and blessings during his pregnancy, it again felt as though dark forces wanted nothing more than for my child to be damaged in the womb.

On the morning of his birth I went into labor and the heavens opened and I danced for three and a half hours in my bedroom.  I felt all of my ancestral mothers dancing with me and time stopped and eternity was staring me in the face.

As I pushed my eleven pound son into the world and his Daddies hands, I felt a creeping darkness around our home, the sky was overcast and it felt as though the sun had hidden away for a time.  As soon as Andy was completely born the sun came streaming into our bedroom and all hell broke loose as he was floppy and unresponsive and I started to bleed my life away.  Paul called for an ambulance, but you are going to have to purchase my book A Mothers Journey to read the rest of that birth story.

As I have observed Andrew mature spiritually and overcome various trials and temptations in his life, I have been so pleased with his willingness to embrace the truth of the gospel.  I know he will be a mighty missionary and look forward to the year that he and Jeff will both be serving in the field and I get to revel in the joy of the letters and emails home.

I pray that he has a wonderful year in school and that many joyful memories are created.

Brahms Requiem….Moving from Babylon to Zion

imageI have been using Rutters Gloria and Brahms Requiem as the music for my Classical Yoga Class every week.

The class is a weekly “Community Outreach” type of thing, free and open to the public. When I asked my boss if she would be willing for me to teach a class using Classical Music she said that would be great.

I cannot stand New Age music, it just sounds so whiny and although I have meditated to eastern music in some of the finest Yoga Studios in Colorado, I would always ache to use my music while attempting transcendence instead of the twangy repetitive “Ya Ya” music of India.

The beauty of being the teacher is I get to pick the music.

A few months ago I uploaded both major classical works to The 528 Site to change the frequency from 440 to 528 hertz. To learn more about 528 click HERE.

The mp3s were both recordings from professional choirs that I sang with in Colorado. So my voice is in this music.

Ever since obtaining the CD’s after the concerts I have thought of this music as my own personal medicine.

An exquisite joy pours through my body every time I listen and by upping the frequency, it is that much more medicinal in the healing energy contained therein.

The text of John Rutters Gloria is in latin, but it is an ode to Jesus Christ written in the finest tradition of classical music.

A German Requiem generously quotes from some of my favorite biblical texts. I love the whole thing from beginning to end, but my all time favorite portion is a text from Isaiah chapter 35. Brahms used this text over and over again all throughout the work.

The chapter is sprinkled liberally through the whole requiem, (as a side note, this chapter is also used in my favorite portion of the Messiah), I won’t quote the whole chapter, but I would like to encourage those who have felt defeated by the many scandals that are overwhelming the country right now to click over to that section of Isaiah and read the whole thing. “The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them, and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose. It shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice even with joy and singing:”

Isaiah 35:1-2

Brahms used the final verse in chapter 35 as the text for the final part at the end of movement 2 of the requiem. It is my favorite part of the whole work.

I have timed this music to be the accompanyment to a specific portion of my Yoga Class where we really energize our bodies using a variety of techniques including Reiki and Reflexology enhanced with essential oils.

Here is the text:

“And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.”

Isaiah 35:10

Here is a clip from my choir singing this text (I am on the top row furthest to the left).

If anyone reading this post today is overwhelmed by current events, I would like to encourage you to spend some time pondering, praying, and listening to these amazing choral works today. Doing so will lift your spirits and chase away any fear that may have engulfed your heart.

I would love to hear from you in the comment section. Do you have a favorite scriptural text that comforts and consoles when life overwhelmes?

Please share!
