Provident Living: Food Storage and 72 Hour Kits

These past few months I have been doing a huge overhaul of our Food Storage, re-boxing all of the cans, throwing away old food (fifteen year old oatmeal is YUCKY!), and inventorying all of our food.  I also plan to do a canning project this week, that I will blog later, canning approximately 500 pounds of grains, seeds, and beans to bump our storage  back up to the one year level.  We are going to empty out all of the water barrels and restock them, and we purchased new filters for our Shaklee Whole House System and our Reverse Osmosis Water Purifier.

I feel like I should mention once again that the main reason I learned how to give birth alone at home was because of end times prophecies around societal chaos.  With that commotion revving up quite a bit the past ten years, I want to testify that all Mothers should learn some basics around self reliant mothering just in case they can’t get to a hospital to give birth and the baby formula is sold out at the store…

PS I know I have shared these videos before, but here are my Provident Living You Tubes taped in 2006, with four year old Benjamin “helping” every step of the way.

Provident Living

It is perhaps more important than ever before for individuals and families to be prepared for any emergency. I just put together a playlist of a series of videos I made a couple of years ago that have been hosted on You Tube. In these clips I share the contents of our 72 hour kits and take viewers on a tour of our storage room.

The main reason that I decided to become self sufficient with my Mothering was because of end times chaos. The absolute confidence I feel in this hard won knowledge has brought a peaceful quiet to my heart, knowing that if me or one of my daughters was pregnant and the infrastructures of medicine, health care, and birth professionals were out of our reach, we could confidently give birth and mitigate most emergencies because of the skills so aquired.

Below the video are several links to LDS Church Provident Living information. These concise and professionally designed web sites are the best on the web for emergency preparedness information. I also love Emergency Essentials and have been getting their catalog in the mail for the past fifteen years. Go ahead and sign up on their email list and mailing list. That quarterly reminder about provident living is a great reminder to update food storage. I don’t like MRE’s (The militarys Meals Ready to Eat) and so we put together our own 72 hour kits with foods purchased from wal mart, but the ready made kits from Emergency Essentials are a total bargain if you don’t have the time to put together your own kit.

September is National Preparedness Month

One of my main goals with this blog has been to encourage families to use whole foods on a day to day basis. Since september is national preparedness month and many people are storing food for the first time, I thought I would share a round up of my videos and blog posts, carefully prepared to help the novice cook use whole foods.
At the end of this post are a couple of links to government web sites where all you ever wanted to know about preparedness is available.
I believe we in America are more at risk for a WMD attack than at any time in our nations history. This book, Nuclear War Survival Skills, which is available online, educated me in the facts of nuclear survival.

Hard times have some flirting with survivalism
Economic angst has Americans stockpiling ‘beans, bullets and Band-Aids’

SEATTLE – Atash Hagmahani is not waiting for the stock market to recover. The former high-tech professional turned urban survivalist has already moved his money into safer investments: Rice and beans, for starters.

“I hoard food,” says Hagmahani, 44, estimating that he has enough to last his family a year or two. “I’m not ashamed to admit it.”

“People keep asking when this (economic crisis) is going to clear up,” says Hagmahani, who agreed to be interviewed on the condition that he be identified only by this pseudonym, which he uses for his survivalist blog, or by his first name, Rob.”

My long time readers know that our family has a supply of food and that I have been working diligently to get our family medically self sufficient for most of our twenty year marriage.
We gave birth to our last two sons after doing all of our own prenatal care, and I have spent thousands of dollars purchasing books to educate myself on family self reliance. Few topics define me or my life more than provident living, and I have attempted to not only learn the facts, but put that knowledge into practice by actually doing the things that I promote, like cooking with whole foods, rarely going to doctors or dentists, and living as if the governmental infrastructures did not exist. We homeschooled for five years, and we have tried to live in such a way that if the electricity and water were turned off, we would be able to live for a couple months here in our little home without any help from anyone.
I have taught hundreds of classes on Emergency Preparedness here in my community, and personally know many families who are doing the exact same things that we are. In fact one of my friends who has been rather scornful of food storage recently purchased a years supply of food for her family of seven.
I testify that family preparedness will help individuals and families to survive whatever is in the future for our society.
