The Paul Hatch Family April 2008
My parents drove out to Colorado on the way to Salt Lake City for Conference this weekend. They stopped by early in the week and we had a family gathering. My Dad snapped this shot of our family with his digital camera. My parents will be in the conference center for the solemn assembly this morning in Salt Lake City.
Here is a link to an article published this morning on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints web site explaing General Conference! The conference is streamed live on the internet, so click on the link to get to the site!
We will be sustaining our new Prophet Thomas Monson:

“Men and women who are offered various opportunities to serve in the Church are given this kind of acknowledgement by common consensus of other Church members in local congregational meetings. When a new First Presidency is sustained, the meeting is called a solemn assembly.

Common consent in the Church is an agreement among the members and leaders of a congregation, local or worldwide, regarding proposed assignments given to people within that congregation. Individuals choose to accept an assignment, and fellow members then have the chance to show support for that decision. A form of congregational common consent was practiced in biblical times, as found in the book of Exodus, when Moses “told the people all the words of the Lord” and the “people answered with one voice.”

What is General Conference?
General Conference is Personal

“Mormons find that the same address can be understood in different ways by different people. Mormons ascribe this to a desire on the part of each person to receive uniquely relevant and applicable instruction and inspiration from sermons, with the help of God’s Holy Spirit. This form of tailor-made learning, experienced by people of all faith traditions who sincerely engage with sacred texts or in religious services, is something that must be experienced to be truly comprehended.

For Mormons, general conference is an exciting time when large numbers gather to hear sermons, sacred music and news. But the most satisfying, profound and exhilarating thoughts and feelings of inspiration come when one person receives an answer to a serious personal question or is reassured by a connectedness to God and others.”

As a confirmed News Junkie, General Conference is an opportunity for me to relax, sit back, and over a two day span hear eight hours of pure unadulterated truth. It always recharges my batteries and keeps me grounded for the next six months of “the philosophies of men mingled with scripture” as I closely follow current events.

CNN: Jenny McCarthy: My sons recovery from autism – Jenny Spanks Docs on Larry King LIVE!

Green Our Vaccines Rally on June 4, 2008 in Washington, DC.

Generation Rescue

“In light of the recent Hannah Poling decision, in which the federal court conceded that vaccines could have contributed to her autism, we think the tide is finally turning in the direction of parents like us who have been shouting concerns from our rooftops for years.”

Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carrey are actors and parents actively involved in autism-related causes. McCarthy is the author of the book Louder Than Words: A Mother’s Journey in Healing Autism.
Go here to read the whole editorial by Jenny and Jim and also to watch the related videos hosted on the CNN web site.
I have to applaud Jenny McCarthy for her tenacity. Her much needed voice has blasted through media outlets and the recent “debate” on Larry King Live was so timely. The most distressing part of her interview with King, at least to me, was when she talked about how she would never know what her son would have been like without first being hit by the vaccines.
I want to testify to her and to parents like her that the day will come when you will know your child in full Human Glory: Physical, Emotional, and Intellectual wholeness. I did not mention Spiritual Capacity because it is a well known fact that autistic children have highly developed spiritual abilities and insights.
During the resurrection all of us will be able to shed all known deformities and disabilities and we will be able to lay claim to the fullness of our Godly Heritage as sons and daughters of Heavenly Father and live healthy through eternity. That is my testimony and my witness.
I know we will experience a Fullness of Eternal Family Joy with our spirits and our bodies reunited in perfect harmony and health.

Epidurals???

Funny article out of the UK about Epidurals.
Epidural.jpg
Rixa has a great round up on her blog.
The funniest line from the piece was this one from the doctor:

“Natural childbirth has become a multimillion-dollar industry. The fear of epidurals is promoted by those who discourage their use – and who have a vested interest in doing so.”

The people who administer epidurals are some of the wealthiest people on the planet.

Whither the Doula?

This article in the New York Times really dissed the whole idea of hiring a doula, so I thought I would chime in with a Defense of the Doula.
QUOTE:

“Then “she urged my husband and me to take a shower to ease the pain,” Ms. Myers said. “I told her I didn’t want to, but she was adamant.”

Dripping wet, freezing and in bone-shattering pain, Ms. Myers said she seethed in silence. When she ultimately chose an epidural, her doula walked out. “She was so set on my having a natural birth, she offended me, she offended the nursing staff, she offended my O.B.,” Ms. Myers said.

In an era of nurse shortages and high Caesarean rates, doulas and lactation consultants can be godsends for many women. Indeed, multiple studies show that a doula’s presence during childbirth leads to shorter labor, less medical intervention and a happier experience.”

“But the increased popularity of doulas and lactation consultants has also led to more conflict — not only with parents but doctors and nurses as well.”
Conflict with doctors and nurses….hmmmmm… seems like this is the big issue….
As well it should be. When doulas cut down on epidural use, interventions, and overall use of medicine and surgery during birth, the financial bottom line is being affected. A single mother all alone is so easy to manipulate into interventions, and a Mom with an uneducated husband or boyfriend who just wants his sweetheart to make it out alive is especially easy to bully into the OR.

Whose your Daddy? Jenny Hatch responds to Evolutionary Obstetrician Dr. Amy Tuteur MD

I was just over at the Home Birth Conclusion….I mean, Debate Blog and read this post by Dr. Amy about Evolutionary biology.

For me, this is the crux of the debate and it is why I will never come to a meeting of the minds with people who believe what she believes.
She Said:

“A basic principle of homebirth advocacy is that women are “designed to give birth”. A variety of further claims flow from this: birth shoulded be “trusted” because it is designed to work; the incidence of death in childbirth must be low or “we wouldn’t be here”; complications are caused by intervening with the natural process instead of respecting it. These claims are spectacularly wrong because the basic principle is spectacularly wrong.

Women are not “designed”. Their bodies are the result of evolution. Evolution does not create perfection. It produces a wide variation in many traits and then selects for those that improve survival in the existing environment. The scientific discipline of evolutionary biology seeks to apply our knowledge of evolution to understanding the basis of human health and health problems. It has important implications for our understanding of childbirth and it reveals why claims that women are “designed” to give birth vaginally are both unscientific and foolish.”

Why would I as a Christian Woman who believes that my husband and I are divinely created in the very image of our Heavenly Parents ever in a million years go to someone like her for help with our births?

It’s one thing to use a doctor who has a foundation of Judeo/Christian or Muslim faith who believes in God and that he is our Heavenly Father. It is quite another to go to a doctor who has believed every scientific lie taught to him in medical school about evolutionary biology.

If that evolutionary doctor was delivering my child, his basic premises and beliefs, you know, that I evolved from slime and my genetic and biological mutations have made my pelvis WAY too small to deliver a large child, or any child without his help, would most certainly impact his attitudes and beliefs about childbirth, my childs birth. Why would I as a faithful woman pay him thousands of dollars to practice on my divinely created body?

See, I don’t just believe that I am created in the image of my Heavenly Parents, I KNOW IT. It is one of the foundations of my life.
Ironically the evolutionary doctor who would take issue with me birthing without his help would have me transfer all of my Faith in God to Faith in Him and his drugs and surgical interventions to birth my child.

Not going to happen.

I KNOW who my Daddy is. And I know that he designed birth perfectly, I know that the various ebbs and flows of hormonal connectedness and interactions were designed by a loving Heavenly Parent who is only a prayer away while I am in labor.
I KNOW that my body has the ability to birth alone, safely, happily and perfectly at home.

The scriptures have counseled me to put all of my Faith in God. Not in the fleshy realm where doctors live, breath, and function. I love the quote that says “what if something went wrong during my birth and all I had to trust in was GOD?”

Carol Balizet

In Proverbs 3:5 it says
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”

In 2 Nephi 4:34 this advice is repeated again:

“O Lord, I have trusted in thee, and I will trust in thee forever. I will not put my trust in the arm of flesh; for I know that cursed is he that putteth his trust in the arm of flesh. Yea, cursed is he that putteth his trust in man or maketh flesh his arm.”

I don’t particularly Trust Birth, I trust the Lord, whose daughter I am, who is sending these little children down to our home to live and be taught and loved and cherished. I have found that by trusting the Lord to help me while I birth, I have developed a greater Love and Faith in Him. And I defy the Godless Professional who would step in between my relationship with my Father in Heaven and start dictating to me what I should or should not do as a mother.
