Rixa had this to say about her vision of unity in the birth reform movement: Go here
“Love is a tremendous motivating force. I challenge you to join me in transforming our verbal swords into plowshares. Let’s turn the endless debates into something more beautiful and more useful: a Vision of Unity.”
I completely endorse Rixa’s vision and hope for soothing the debates around birth. I have been a loud voice defending Unassisted Birth and have used the most extreme rhetoric possible to make the case for autonomous birth and perhaps by so doing, what has perhaps been lost in the crosshairs of my words is the fact that I support any woman giving birth however she feels comfortable. And be willing to live and let live. I honestly don’t care how other people choose to live day to day. I only feel the need to articulate why and how I birth to make the case that this form of parturition is in fact just another lifestyle choice that is valid. Because of my concern that we might be outlawed, I have vamped up my defense to a much higher level these past few years.
But one of my New Years Resolutions is to tone it down a little and not get lost in the endless debates, recognizing that every form of birth is valid and important in the various situations where it is needful. The ultimate principle is that Mothers should be supported in searching for the type of scenario that feels right to them.
That being said, IF some busybodies in the government decide to outlaw homebirth, I will fight back. We should never be afraid of debate. Even if it feels just a little contentious, or in the case of birth, alot contentious. I’ve said it before, but the CLASH of Ideas is the sound of freedom!!! (Lady Bird Johnson)
