Power Line blog: Panic in the streets

The Democratic streets, anyway, as Jim Wooten writes:

“Democrats know something, and desperation is setting in. They have a novice campaigner who wanders off message. With every advantage in the primaries, Obama couldn’t win the big states — New York, New Jersey, Ohio and Pennsylvania — against Hillary Clinton, even when he got to define the rules for running against him. She could never risk alienating the base she’ll need in 2012; John McCain and Sarah Palin have no such constraints — hence the panic. For a “change” candidate, Obama appears to be a man locked in time, unable to move past criticism, unable to move from the grip of the Democratic left, unable to adapt to the changed reality that the campaign is not the referendum on the war in Iraq or on the administration of George W. Bush that he’d envisioned. …

The Democratic left is still seething from the Kerry campaign’s loss and is determined to see Bush expelled from the White House in disgrace — the reason it is locked in to making this a referendum on the administration now ending.

It barely worked when the maverick McCain, no darling of the Bushites, got the nomination. With Palin, the Washington outsider, the “third term” argument is plainly absurd. But Obama can’t let go, just as the lefties can’t let go of the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth defeat of Kerry. He can’t move on. …

Obama will lose because with less than two months remaining voters won’t be able to get comfortable with him. He can’t stay on message and he can’t avoid sending signals that interfere with the message when he does.

That’s right, I think. No doubt surprises are in store between now and November, and we are witnessing an unprecedented effort by the national press to drag their candidate across the finish line at all costs. But the only events between now and November that are foreseeably likely to change the momentum of the race are the debates, and Obama is a bad debater. When he is not reading from a teleprompter, he is hesitant, often incoherent, and prone to gaffes that, if people are paying attention, may make him a laughingstock. So there is good reason for the panic that is now spreading among Democrats.

PAUL adds: I see it a little differently. The momentum in favor of McCain might well be changed if Obama simply gets back on message. There are reasons why he was leading until recently, and they mostly have to do with the perception that an adminstration McCain generally supported was bad for the country. I don’t assume Obama will fail to return to this theme and avoid distractions.

If McCain’s momentum is stopped (not even reversed, just stopped), the race will remain close until the debates. I agree with John that McCain has the edge in the debates. He’s been answering questions from reporters non-stop for almost a year-and-a-half; Obama’s view on questions from reporters is that eight is enough. In addition, McCain can project an authenticity that Obama will be very hard-pressed to match.

But debates are unpredictable; there’s a long history of pre-debate favorities coming out second best. One mistake can determine the outcome, and anyone can make a mistake.

Assuming Obama gets back to his basic anti-Republican message, and assuming the debates don’t produce a clear victor, the election probably will be decided in the final week or two when swing voters figure out which scares them more, another Republican administration or an inexperienced leftist Democrat in the White House. For these voters, it may be a close call.”

I was part of the Mothering Political Chat Room during the 2004 election before they banned me for speaking my mind. If you scroll down that thread you can read my moniker UC mom and some of the chat I had with conservative friends on the day we voted.
It was so fun talking to the many many liberals on that site. They accused me several times of being a freeper man in his fifties trolling on the site. I had a devil of a time convincing them that I was a legitimate Natural Family Living Mothering who ate my veggies and gave birth at home. But I never quite fit in with that crowd, even though I made wonderful friends on the conservative side of things.
That being said, it was amazing to see the state of delusion most of those gals were in as we chatted about politics. I kinda feel sorry for them, with Palin on the ticket the blowout is going to be so severe and the fallout so damaging to liberal causes…well, it is not going to be a pretty site.
Sometimes I wonder if any of them will have the humility to admit that there is something real, good, and empowering about a freedom message. But they seemed to like the looting and slavery that defines Collectivism. I learned alot participating on the Mothering Discussion boards and when I was banned shortly after the election, it was then I decided to go all out as a blogger, because I was tired of being chased out of chat rooms for my political views.
(Latter Day Family Resources simply pulled the politics board after I started posting, and my LDS UC board imploded politically after 9-11 and I found it impossible to chat with so many who knew so much that wasn’t so). Please note these were both forums for mormon homeschoolers and homebirthers. I just figured if we could not talk reasonably together about politics without personal attacks, there was little point in debating and talking about much of anything. Funny thing was, they always assumed that me attacking their political views was me attacking them, and they most especially did NOT want me quoting the prophets and scriptures who have waxed eloquent over the years on all things political.
Oh Well. I know what I am about and Blogging satisfys my heart. Nobody can edit, ban, or spin my words.
It is going to be fun watching the implosion of the democratic party these next two months.

Whole Mothering Thread around the election (please note this was a conservative chat for just conservatives on that board the day of the 2004 presidential election) Please note too that this thread is thirty six pages long and if you want to read the whole thread, you will need to skip back to page one.
Every month we had a new thread for our conservative chat.
And this is the November thread, which included some info about our response to the election.
As stated above, I am UC mom in the chat. Here are pages 2, 3, and 4 of the thread:
I also note that this material is Copyrighted by Mothering Magazine and I share the three pages of the whole 36 page thread under the Fair Use rules for nonprofit educational purposes only.

Fellow Georgia girl here, let’s celebrate!
Fox news as of 7:22pm EST:
US – President
CANDIDATE PARTY VOTES ELECTORAL
George W. Bush (i) Republican 362,977 (56%) 34
John F. Kerry Democrat 281,365 (43%) 3
Ralph Nader Independent 2,730 (0%) 0
It would be really nice if the ratios stayed like that.

I see that DeMint is up in the polls in SC. Since that’s my home state and we live on the border, I follow them as well. I’m surprised that SC is still too close to call. That’s a sad surprise.

I have to tell you about this conversation I had with the gal in line with me. She was a really nice Democrat. We had to stand outside in the cold morning air for 90 minutes, and we were both freezing. We chatted about this and that, I could tell she was trying to figure out if I was a democrat too.
So I just asked her point blank, what is the biggest issue for you? She started talking about friends she had in Iraq who were soldiers, Halliburton, etc…etc… I just listened and then I said, “well, I am a conservative and I will be voting for the president….”
And then we had the absolute most wonderful conversation I think I have ever had with a democrat.
We shared our hearts and I could tell the thirty or so people standing within hearing distance were listening in. At one point she took my hands, which were frozen and started trying to help me warm them up. It was really amazing….
When it was time to vote, we just looked each other in the eye, and thanked each other for the conversation. Smiled and voted for our people.
I walked home from the school where I voted. It was such a beautiful crisp morning. I prayed as I walked down the big hill in Louisville to my home – about a mile – I prayed for Freedom, and light, and a fair vote….I honestly don’t care who is president as long as it is fair. I prayed for any incident of voter fraud or intimidation to be exposed the very minute someone attempted it, and I prayed for my children and my grandchildren to be born, that they will be able to live in freedom.
Now I am watching the news…it is close….closer than I ever thought it would be. I have a sense of resignation. I lived through eight years of Clinton. If Kerry is President, I will just live with it, and continue to support my party and my politics….
I pray Bush is president for these next four years, and that he is able to put conservatives on the Supreme Court, and that he continues his policies in regards to terror.
But we shall see….
Hope everyone has a great night. I have to go to wal-mart and get mittens. We had snow for the first time yesterday and our mittens from last year are too small.
God Bless America!

I’m tunned into FOX and MSNBC…..gonna watch more TV then every before
I’m anxiously awaiting the results, but I’m not a nervous wreck.
I’m gonna keep my head level unlike many I see here today.
No drinkin’ for me…….If Kerry wins, I’ll be very disappointed, I won’t support him, but I will pray for him, and accept his win. (if of course no fraud on their part is exposed).
If Bush wins, I’ll be dancin’ around abit and offering a thanks.
Que serra’ serra’…..is my motto tonight

Rating: 0% (0) Jenny, I’m so glad you had that awesome experience today. I have SO many dem/liberal friends IRL and we have relationships like the brief one you had today. And I’m so thankful that I do have those IRL to balance out some of the extreme animosity aimed at me online. It helps me to remember that most people, regardless of political leanings, are good people. The rest of them? Well, we can just ignore them as they do us, right?
NM, I’m with you. Whatever happens, happens. I will grieve some tomorrow if Kerry wins, that’s for sure, but life will go on. We will still live in an awesome country with lots to be thankful for!

That’s a wonderful story! Thanks for sharing.
We are praying as well, or, as my 4 year old ds says, “We’re talking to God.”

good story UCmom
I got into a talk about the women hostages held & how awful that was & no one pointed fingers or no blame just how terrible the insurgents were towards the English & Polish women ther trying to help the Iraqi people.
It was nice that it went beyond party lines !

I talked to my dad about 8 p.m. (he worked the polls today). He sounded tired but upbeat. He had a steady stream of business but there weren’t any glitches. He and I both got our republican senate members tonight, so we’re pleased!

Well, that’s a good note to go to bed on! Like 2000, it looks like I’ll be going to bed with the tv on and waking up periodically to see if anyone has been declared a winner.
Sounds like the absentee ballot issue in Florida is going to be a nightmare. The lawyers are already rubbing their palms together and salivating.
Have a great evening all! See you tomorrow, come rain or shine!

I agree completely. Glad to see him gone!
I’m also thrilled to see the president take a such a large percentage of the popular vote, more than any president since the 80’s I believe. Woohoo Bush!

Can someone tell me why they haven’t called Nevada and New Mexico for Bush yet? Nevada is at 100% reporting with Bush in the lead by 20,000 votes. What gives?

Goodbye Daschle! Don’t let the door hit you where the good Lord split you!
I am so encouraged by the results so far. The country hasn’t gone as mad as I had feared earlier in the election cycle. Traditional values still hold sway in America. Thank God.

Getting ready to make my second pot! I even bought some expensive, delicious organic coffee last night just for my morning celebration!
You know, I admit I am not a competitive person. I just hate that someone has to lose! As THRILLED as I am over the results of last night–and believe me, I have done lots of happy dances this morning–I can’t help but think how hard this has to be for Kerry, Edwards, and their families. So much energy and effort goes into a campaign like this. I can’t imagine what the letdown must feel like. Of course, with their hefty bank accounts, they can rent a tropical island for a month and head off for some R&R!

Rating: 0% (0) You’re a better person than I am, Fianna. I could give two figs about Kerry and Edwards and their families. They were working for the destruction of our Republic and I’m glad they’re losing. I don’t think they ever had noble or good intentions beyond their own glory. I hope they all have a fabulous time at their respective vacation homes while they recover from the shock of failing at their election steal, but I don’t feel bad for them at all.
I do feel bad for the mamas on this site who are so upset by the results. But I pray that they’ll just come around to believe that conservative values are a good thing for America overall. I’m not under any illusions that that’s going to happen, but it’s a nice thought.

Yay, there are conservatives on this board!! I had pretty much decided that this board was all liberals, but I’m happy to see some Bush supporters. And I’m very happy to say that our state is not the one holding everyone up this year, we went to BUSH!!! It looks like we’ve got it in the bag for Ohio too, just hope that Kerry concedes today and we can officially declare Bush the winner!

I’m very happy with the election results. From no partial birth abortion to no new taxes to not reversing the marriage tax and death tax to being commander in cheif and keeping our country safe – Dubya is the man! I was totally terified (and still am a bit) that Kerry might win. And honestly if he did win, i think the Kerry supporters would be freaking out in two years about what a mistake they’d made.
(and i’m a registered dem for years who is changing her voter registration card after voting republican this year for the very first time ever!)
go W ! four more years!
yes, theres work to be done – lets give him time to finish it.

Don’t underestimate the power of prayer! God works miracles.
The best we can do is pray for them. The anger and hatred I witnessed form many mamas here made me very, very sad.

Ladies-
If you aren’t a liberal throwing a hissy over Bush winning, prepare to get censored.
UC MOM had a thread where she posted “Let freedom ring” because Bush won, and a bunch of the people who have been crying into their tea flamed the crap out of her. The thread wasn’t closed, oh no…it was TOTALLY REMOVED. I will be putting a cached copy of it up on my own webspace. This is ridiculous, I never thought the civil liberties would be stifled by the very people who claim to champion them. And they call the conservative government fascist? Pot…kettle…

Rating: 0% (0) gothmommy, it is againt our user agreement to post to a thread to criticize admin or moderator action in dealing with issues. If you have a question or concern please take it to us through PM or email. Don’t make it a subject of discussion.
That thread has been removed for review for inappropriate posting, hissy throwing and other such stuff. We do censor here. Nothing new about that. Anything that is against our UA and other specific forum rules and guidelines will be removed.
I’ll also point out that copying and pasting of a discussion thread to another site or to email or PM is a copyright violation. You’ll need permission to reproduce it if you are one to respect and uphold the rights of others.

We KNOW there is going to be a lot going on here today. Let’s celebrate in this thread and not get shut down, ok? There are going to be a lot of folks looking for any excuse to take out their frustration/anger. Let’s not give them an easy target by referring to other threads/posts. I need to celebrate with you guys today, so don’t get our thread closed!
ETA: Oooops. I see that CM & I were posting at the same time!

.
but what about the rising death-toll in Iraq? What about the death penalty? what about oppression of gays? what about fasicm disguised as a “Patriot Act”? What about the millions of children with no health care? What about a floundering economy? What about the gall-darned ENVIROMENT~ the trees that are dissappearing, the oceans that are sufferring, the air that is turning black, the oil that is being sucked out of the ground like holy water????
How can anyone who says they are “conservative” stand for this. These are not actions of conservation…
and as for Christian morals. I do believe Jesus would be ashamed.
Call me liberal. I call myself compassionate. On the side of humanity, of children, of our precious enviroment, our sufferring planet.
I am not whining. I am defending!

Okay, I agree! I see that others have already stepped in trying to ruffle some feathers. Let’s stick to celebrating and address them elsewhere.

Rating: 0% (0) I’m cautiously optimistic…but I admit I don’t want to read the other threads in this forum. I don’t believe America is going down the tubes, and I wouldn’t have believed that if Kerry won either. God is in control and it’s all his plan and his timing anyway.
The positive that came out of it was the voter turnout. Good to see that people DO care about what happens to America!

I am so happy this morning! Both my babies will have been born under President Bush! I have hope for this country and I am relieved that the heartland of America chose our President.
This victory means that Hollywood, Europe, Michael Moore, MTV, and the big cities like Chicago, LA, Boston, and New York did not decide our Presidency for us! I am more thrilled at their defeat than the defeat of Kerry! Traditional values still exist in the USA!

I am SO glad this election is over and I am thrilled that it *looks like* Bush will be in for another 4 years. I admit – this forum scares me a bit, but seeing that America has voted reminds me that this place is not the mainstream. There have been times I have come here and felt depressed because one would start to believe that what is posted here is all reality.
(*cough* Far 9/11 is NOT reality people! Ask MM and he will tell you himself! *cough*)
I am so glad that there will be no more ads…I am so glad that I don’t have to see these candidates going back and forth. I am so glad I don’t need to worry about the safety of my family and the state of our country because the right man is in office to do the job.
Let’s hear it for the semi-crunchy mamas for Bush! Now back to my cloth diapering, exclusive breastfeeding, and other crunchy tendencies. But you can sure I will be happily watching Fox waiting for the official good news.
(Please tell me I can’t be flamed in here. :LOL I am SO asking for it if I can be!)

I was wondering what happened to that thread. Do you mind sending me a copy? I went to bed about 1AM Mountain time and I didn’t get to watch myself get nuked.
I guess it was against the rules to say that Bush won. Well I had just heard that he won Ohio by 135,000 and I figured it was all over, provisionals or not. If I was wrong I would be happy to change the thread title, I have been known to be willing to do that before, but pulling the thread?? Seems weird to me.
