On sunday night I made a quick movie outlining the steps we have made to prepare. I had to break it up into three parts to fit on U TUBE….ENJOY!
Topics Covered: Water Storage, 72 Hour Kits, Long Term Food storage in #10 Cans. I did not mention it in the movie, but we also have a shot gun with lots of ammo.

In this clip I mention 75 gallon water container. I meant to say 75 gallon Hot Water Heater.
And when I said that our family could live in our home self sufficiently, that would mean with no grocery shopping, and no water, electricity, or any sort of “help” from any outside sources.
One of the main reasons we decided to educate ourselves about Emergency Home Childbirth is for just such a situation, where, for whatever reason, we were not able to depend on anyone to help us with a baby being born. I have had many friends over the years claim that we would never have such a situation develop, or that God would never make us go through such hard times. I would suggest that “failure of imagination” is what leads to this type of thinking.
I can think of dozens of scenarios that could potentially play out where we would need to have self sufficiency skills related to Motherhood.

UPDATE: October 4th
This morning Ben and I went to his playgroup at my friend Patricias house. I brought along my daughters video camera and asked a couple of friends if I could interview them on Provident Living. Two of the friends at the playgroup, which is made up of mostly LDS Mothers and babies agreed to be interviewed.
The clip is really short, but I hope it demonstrates that many people are feeling the need to prepare and are taking such preparations seriously. Recently our Stake President, our local Priesthood leader at church requested that the whole Boulder Stake set some serious goals this year for preparation. We were supposed to have our 72 hour kits finished by October 1st, and a one month supply of food by Dec. 1st and a three month supply of food by June 1st 2007.
The whole stake has been working hard to hold classes and encourage the members to be prepared. When Patricia and Deborah mentioned being Obedient as one of the main reasons for preparing, what they meant was that as Mormons we believe being Obedient to the direct admonitions from our local priesthood leaders, who have stewardship in behalf of us, brings blessings into our lives.
As I was talking to Deborah after the interview, I told her that I believed the greatest blessing that comes from being prepared is a feeling of peace in my heart. That should the storms howl and the planet shake, I know that I have done everything within my power to be prepared and follow the counself that has come down to Mormons for the past 80 years about Provident Living. She agreed. I also mentioned to her that a woman who spoke in Fast and Testimony Meeting a couple weeks ago, talked about the peace she has felt come over her heart as she prepared 72 hour kits for herself and her college age and newly married children. She said this was an unanticipated blessing of following the counsel to prepare.
I personally believe that it is the most important blessing of being prepared and living providently. I have enjoyed this peace in my heart for many years, and I can testify that “If you are prepared you will not fear!”
Here is the Video Clip:

I ran out of space on the video card in the middle of Deborahs answer to my question. I asked her if she had any advice for people getting started with Provident Living. She said that it was very helpful to plan a one month menu, and then start shopping with that menu in mind. It saved her loads of money, and kept her cooking efforts very concise and predictable.

Underweight Infants at Risk as Teens

Brothers%21.jpg
Underweight Infants at Risk as Teens
“Children born underweight but not disabled are still more likely to have physical and mental problems as teen-agers, researchers said Monday.
Lower scores on tests of intelligence, memory, learning and motor skills were found to be more likely among 16 year olds who weighed less than 4.4 pounds at birth but were otherwise free of disabilities, the study said.
Low birth weight is a known risk factor for mental retardation and cerebral palsy, but subtler brain injuries inflicted by an undersized head may afflict others born underweight, especially boys, it said.”
I spent eight years teaching childbirth before I became on online birth activist. I remember reading a quote by Doris Haire, the famous advocate for proper pregnancy nutrition. She claimed that no matter what the size of the mother, if a child was under seven pounds at birth, the mother was malnourished during her pregnancy.
During my first two pregnancies, I did not eat the Brewer Pregnancy Diet. I was a strict vegetarian and although my daughters were both over eight pounds, I did not focus on protein in the least.
With my boys pregnancies, I ate the Brewer Diet faithfully. Jeff was 8 pounds 14 ounces at birth. Andrew was 11 pounds and 12 ounces at birth (and five weeks late), and Benjamin was 9 pounds 8 ounces at birth.

All I can do is share my stories of pregnancy and birth and hope that you mothers who are reading decide to take nutrition seriously. Go check out Tom Brewer’s web site. Read it, and embrace the idea that nutrition is the KEY! In the end it is the ultimate gift that you can give to your child. A healthy whole brain is built with nutritious food, NOT drugs.

Anna Nicole Smith’s Son’s Death From Serotonin Syndrome?

From Ann Blake Tracy
Mon Oct 2, 2006 12:38 am (PST)
The following quote is from an Associated Press article on the death of Anna
Nicole Smith that according to Google hit over 1,200 news reports worldwide
this past weekend. I had written to this reporter over two weeks ago to tell
him what they would find caused Daniel’s death, which was exactly what they
did find this past week – the combination of two antidepressants and a pain
killer:
_____________________________
Smith wants others to learn from her son’s death
“She wants to see exactly what happened in a final report because she wants
to make sure it doesn’t happen to someone else’s son,” he said.
Daniel Smith, who reportedly was hospitalized for depression and back pain
before he traveled to Nassau, had been prescribed the antidepressant Lexapro,
Wecht said. He said he had not determined whether Smith had also been
prescribed Zoloft, the other antidepressant found in his system.
The two drugs can be lethal when taken together or in sequence, according to
Ann Blake Tracy, the Des Moines, Iowa-based director of the International
Coalition for Drug Awareness.
“The residue can stay there for some time, and if they’re prescribed one
after they’ve taken another, they can end up in trouble,” she said.
________________________________
Now those of you who have followed my research, heard me speak, or read
articles I have written over the years are aware of how concerned I am about
deaths like Daniel Smith’s. I go absolutely ballistic when I hear of a doctor
giving two of these drugs together or giving them back to back or weaning
someone off one while starting them on another one. And I cannot believe how little
warning there is given to patients if they take over the counter cough or
cold meds with dextromethorphan in them or even dramamine for motion sickness
that the combination with their antidepressant could cause Serotonin Syndrome
which can prove fatal in a 24 hour period.
What is Serotonin Syndrome? It is a condition in which serotonin levels
become much too high. It is generally caused by mixing two serotonergic
medications together. Daniel did not have a chance with three – Zoloft, Lexapro, and
Methadone! Since the main function of serotonin is constriction of smooth
muscle tissue (which all the organs, veins and arteries are) when one dies of
Serotonin Syndrome it is generally caused by multiple organ failure as the
organs clamp up and shut down.
Tragically for many years a Google search for
Serotonin Syndrome would produce our web site where it discusses my book
explaining how deadly and dangerous this is and little to nothing else on the subject.
Most of my information came from Dr. Kirk Mills who I consider a leading
expert on this condition. Thankfully there is now a little more on the net about
this deadly and generally fatal condition. The following quote from a study
lists the symptoms:
“Mental status changes are the most frequently reported symptoms [confusion
(51%), agitation (34%), hypomania (21%), anxiety (15%) and coma (29%)]
associated with serotonin syndrome. Other commonly reported features include motor
abnormalities, cardiovascular changes, gastrointestinal problems and
miscellaneous changes such as diaphoresis [sweating] and fever.”
Now, those of you who have been on these drugs know all too well just how
very often these drugs produce those side effects! So how often are patients
going into high levels of serotonin that could become dangerous?
I believe it
is far more often than most realize. All the drug companies have ever wanted
to discuss is low levels of serotonin, not what happens when the serotonin
levels become too high. Do they really think the drug is going to put the brakes
on when it reaches the “normal” level of serotonin?
For those of you whose loved ones have suffered the mental status changes
leading to tragedies that resulted in more than one life lost you understand
firsthand that for Daniel and his family this tragedy could have been even
worse. Spinning the wheel of toxic reactions generated by high serotonin is like
playing Russian Roulette – you do not know which you are going to get. That
is one reason why it is so difficult for people to understand all the many
toxic reactions these drugs can produce whether they manifest as
mental/behavioral or physical it is the same toxic reaction.
Our prayers go out to Anna Nicole, Howard Stern and all those who loved
Daniel as yet another family suffers yet another senseless loss to these very
deadly drugs. This should make it all too obvious that the black box warnings we
got on antidepressants in the last couple of years are not nearly enough!!
As a society we continue to use these drugs with absolutely no education about
how they work and the cautions that need to be taken – the same mistake we
have made with drug after drug after drug until we finally know enough about
them to pull them from the market. In the meantime too many innocent victims,
literally used as guinea pigs, are left in the wake.
And once again I ask how many must die before we wake up to the nightmare
produced by this group of drugs? How many Daniel’s, Matt’s, Candace’s, Julie’s,
Mark’s, Aaron’s, Jacob’s, Conrad’s, John’s, Tracy’s, Andrea’s, etc., etc.,
etc., who could have made this world such a much brighter place, must we lose
before we stop this wholesale slaughter?

Anna’s child died and his death has been in the press because she is a public figure. How many people have died from this deadly combination of drugs, and had a coroner claim it was a suicide, or something besides what it really was – murder by big pharma???

How to Make Whole Wheat and Flax Organic Bread

Last night I put together my first Pod Cast Video. I’m planning to do this once in a while to help demonstrate whole foods cooking.
Since Whole Grain Bread is the foundation of our Diet, I thought it would be an appropriate Place to begin.
Recipe:
3 and 1/2 Cups Fresh Ground Whole Wheat Flour
1/4 Cup Fresh Ground Whole Golden Flax Seed
1 and 1/3 Cups Water (purified water works best!)
1 Tsp Honey
1 Tsp Yeast
1 Tsp Salt
Bake in Bread Machine that can handle a two pound loaf and has a whole wheat setting.
Here are the Video Clips:
Grinding the Flour:

Here is a video explaining how to fresh grind flax seeds into meal. I used Golden Flax, which has a more buttery flavor than the traditional brown flax. I purchase almost all of my seeds and whole spices at Vitamin Cottage.

Here is a video of Ben and I putting the ingredients for the Bread into the Bread Machine: Ben turned off the camera before I had a chance to explain and demonstrate the rest of the ingredients. You want to add your ingredients into the machine in this order: Water, Honey, Yeast, Flour, Flax Meal, Salt. It is important to put them in the right order. Then I baked the bread on the 2 lb whole wheat setting with a light crust. It is important to make sure your bread machine can handle whole wheat before you try this recipe.

Here is a video taken right after the bread finished baking in the bread machine:

The question must be asked, “can this recipe be used without a bread machine?”
Of Course.
All you would do is put the ingredients into a bowl and mix it well, let it rise, punch it down, let it rise again in a bread pan and bake for 40 minutes in the oven at 375.
I love the bread machine because I can time the loaf to come out hot whenever I want, minimal mess, and I don’t have to spend more than five minutes a day making bread for my family. I made the bread last night and this morning used it to make my children peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for school.
Total Cost of indredients for bread? 25 Cents.
The Economics of Natural Mothering are incredible. To purchase a good loaf of whole wheat bread at the grocery store generally costs between $2 and $5 a loaf. To get the equivelent type of bread (fresh ground grains, hot out of the oven), the only place I know of where you can get it is Great Havest, and a loaf of bread from them costs about $5.00 a loaf.
When you grind the grains and seeds fresh and immediately make the bread, the moisture content of the flour is at its highest peak. Within 12 hours of the flour being ground, 90% of the moisture is gone and the oils in the wheat germ begin to go rancid. That is why it is ideal to freeze whole wheat flour, and why the better health food stores keep all of their whole grain flours in the freezer.
How much better to just purchase your own organic grains and grind them up fresh every day! It only takes a few minutes, the money saved is real, and the costs of the bread machine and wheat grinder can be recouped in just a few short months.
